No way Manager/Sr Manager can lateral into those roles. Operating partner are senior leaders with deep industry experience and operations knowledge. Look at the bios of Carlyle group operating partners, each one can easily be a Partner level at a firm.
Hard, and I doubt it’s one move if you’re at manager or senior manager. Probably best route is working in an operating role at a lower level. Operating partners are usually the ones parachuted in to run the company they’ve acquired.
Do you know what the hierarchy is? What’s below operating partner? I imagine it’s fairly flat - generalist?
Yep - OP’s are generally C-level talent that have actually been CEO/COO/CFOs.
You are going to need more practical hands-on experience running a business before you can parachute in as an operating partner. These are highly successful business leaders that have likely sold their own business and have stake in a fund. Don’t get me wrong, running a desk as a consultant is great experience but working on the business itself with P&L responsibility is just a different ball of wax. operating partners are proven performance drivers.
EY analyst/assoc maybe? Without experience running a biz successfully it is unlikely for PE to trust you to run their investment. Operating parters have to quickly come in and learn the business then run it... anything less they’d be better off just hiring an outside COO/CFO/CEO
Have 20 million in your accounts, and you will have a chance to get in as an operating partner

Unlikely. Hierarchy at some funds I’ve looked at - associate > VP > Principal > OP. Some have an “operations executive” level below OP. If you have the right experience I would target one or two levels below.
