Bowl Leader
Great question; however, I can share that this bowl focuses on Black people
Black people are subject to different assumptions/stereotyping than other people of color
Tbh I am not my authentic (professional) self at work, and don’t get the impression that that would be valued by anyone but my Black colleagues. Maybe I’ll feel comfortable doing so if I make Partner, but as someone more junior is seems high risk/low reward, despite the fact that the cost is high.
What does your authentic self mean to you?
Authenticity requires vulnerability. Not everyone deserves your vulnerability.
I’ve seen teams where a black professional used AAVE and no one bat an eye. The vibe didn’t change, rapport and respect were left in tact. But that was because that team had a leader who baked DIEB principles in to how she lead and in to her team’s culture. The emotional and psychological safety required for that level of authenticity was firmly in place and not conditional.
I’ve also seen where a black professional said “aks” instead of “ask” and it derailed the entire conversation because someone felt the need to correct her and the team’s leader did nothing to stop the train wreck.
Use discernment.
There are definitely leaders out there doing the work to ensure a truly inclusive environment for their teams/employees and some are wayyyyy behind.
Code switching with a litte bit of pepper for added spice, but not too much for the majority. But you still have to be exceptional at your job
