Step one: nail what you are assigned. And I mean really NAIL it. Once you have a strong foundation, approach the PM/Partner and ask them if you can help out with anything they are working on - then nail that too. The key is to build trust, which leads to responsibility.
Can't emphasize this enough. If I'm finding mistakes in your models or inconsistencies in your decks, a conversation about more responsibility won't go well. The other things that help show you're ready, at least in my former firm, are (1) showing you deeply understand the business model (review past deals, understand the economics of the portfolio) and (2) being self-aware about your strengths and weaknesses so I know you'll ask questions when you need to.
It felt like an at all once transition for me. Right about at the 1.5 year mark when I had a massive call that went very very right.
Since then, it’s felt like I’ve gained an immense amount of trust and became much more independent than I had been previously. It seems like more and more of my ideas can get in the book much easier than before.
