What does IndIvidual Contributor mean in Tech? I’ve been asked that a few times in interviews and still not sure what it means. Does it mean I’ll be in a void with no team just generating content and forcing it on people?

You don’t have to manage people. In tech, ICs can get very high to almost a partner equivalent level

like

This is a huge advantage of tech. Kinda brutal that in consulting you can’t move up and stay IC.

I’m in an IC role now. In my old company I was managing 20+ people but left to join a high growth startup and the only role I was a fit for was IC. While I miss managing/mentoring people, the IC role has been great to hone my craft and honestly refresh / coast a bit. I’m planning to jump back into a managerial role in a year or two. In your day to day IC means you aren’t managing people (like everyone has said) but if you’re more senior you’ll have a ton of autonomy around how you work, what you do, etc. My boss basically treats me like a peer so it’s a win win for now.

Thanks! This is very helpful.

No it means you won't be on a management track. For software engineering ICs stay coding and managers manage people and you usually pick one of two paths

Thanks! This is very helpful

It means you don’t manage people. At SF you can progress to a people manager in the same “track”. It helps to distinguish responsibilities as you could be at manager level, but not actually managing any people.

I never had an issue with interviews before, but I am really struggling now. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Left a job in government (prosecution), currently at a mid-size firm. I’m really starting to not only hate law firm life, but the practice of law generally. Is this part of the transition? Not sure I want this life. At least I had insane PTO for govt work.

I got sick with what I at first thought was stomach bug last Sunday (vomiting, fatigue, then crazy chills and body aches). Lasted 1 day. My nose was also a bit congested, so went to get a pcr on Monday and got a positive result. Tested again at 2 diff places on Wed - 2 negatives. All pcr. Had no symptoms since Sunday. Has anyone had something similar happen to them? Was it just false positive (everyone’s been saying that almost never happens), or just super mild case of Covid?
