What does it mean exactly to get PIP'd? Is it really that bad?

Depends what kind of company/manager you work for. Some people get PIP’d, and there’s genuine hope from the company/manager that they’ll start doing better. Then there’s the other type of PIP where the company is just documenting supposed lack of performance in hopes of avoiding a wrongful termination suit when they inevitably kick you to the curb.
