It varies by line of business. In non-recurring businesses like consulting / tax - you need to prove that you are a business development / relationship development machine over time and are a safe bet to be accretive as a partner. Despite rumors and folklore, we don’t make new partners because they are popular or our favorites. We make them because we think they will strengthen the financial position of the firm in the short and long term - and ultimately pay our pensions when we are retired.

Hermès ties. Not necessarily the firm but definitely in my office it’s a must.

I honestly believe every new hire is on partner track until they just can’t keep up anymore. The biggest inflection point seems to come when they are asked to sell work

How much to spend on wedding gifts? Several years post MBA, have like 6 weddings coming up... closeness range from 'I got in off the wedding waitlist' to 'known him since I was 2' - $2-300? (Just me)

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)

Hi, I have positions in IPOD and IPOF. Up a very small amount. The RH ban has me worried about liquidity. Is it worth just cashing out of these positions or do people think it’s worth holding until Chamath announces targets?
