FP&A has many roles and its focus varied depending on a company’s growth stages and industry characters. Basically, has month end closing ( which benefits from your CPA, because you can talk/understand how accounting team does GL), IR base financial reporting ( which also benefits from your CPA, since you read IS/BS techniques better with less learning time). This is more for a company in a relatively stable stage. Other than that, strategy finance( efficiency improvements, funding strategy), business insights, OPEX management etc area are also important and these doesn’t require CPA nor accounting knowledge much. It’s more of a general business sense based on an industry knowledge. I’d start with a task that is related to month closing since you’ll have CPA then expand to other area within the team. FP&A is a top controller department for some companies ( not all companies, again) so you need to be broadly capable of many things.
Varies wildly based on industry
Title doesn’t matter. Salary is slightly higher than other departments due to the fact that a typically better caliber is required such as MBA etc. But once you get in, your salary and promotions follows the same lifecycle of the firm’s policy applying to any other departments. You can jump around FP&A role across the firms but your value goes up better if you stay in the same industry. Also you’ll be likely asked to switch to non-Fp&a rolls if you are doing well in a firm and want to step up as a team head or departments head to demonstrate your diverse leadership skills to the executives. Long run, it’s just like any other corporate department career.
