What does your classroom seating look like? Do students have their own desk, or do you have them arranged in groups?

My kids sit at tables of four. It is good for groups but I still get a lot of off task behavior. It is more the students then the seats because they talk as much in the classes with desks. I like it because it gives them more room while working and the are close enough to do small group work.

I place students who need to stand/move to learn and my students with anxiety at 27-30. My 1-6 is my teacher led station, I have a back table and other flexible seating options so when I pull students during partner or group work 1-6 will move so I can use that table for students who nee assistance. 7-14 are students who I can trust to be at back tables without talking during instruction and students who work well in groups. 16-22 I have students who can work in partners but definitely need the assistance of not having someone in front of them to distract them. 24-26 are students who don’t work well with others but I’ve managed to find a parter which they’ll gradually learn those people skills before I move the tables into all groups. This is my first year at an urban school and in my opinion, my students didn’t work well in an “one size fits all” seating arrangement. I came up with this a few weeks ago it seemed to solve some of the problem I was having. I wanted groups so badly because I wanted students to talk through the math and solve together. I was having issues with certain students no matter who they were sitting by which is why I still have semi-rows in the middle and back.

The front of the room is the side with the team blue table. My projector is in front of that table as well.

Rows for testing, stadium style for direct instruction. Groups of 2, 3, and sometimes 4 for guided, individual and group practice/ exercises. In other words, I spend too much time moving furniture (desks).

I start out the year in standard seating and then move into groups. It gives me an idea of each student’s strengths and gives the class time to learn procedures. I require the students to collaborate with each other when possible.
