What does your firm do for you if you complete a technical certification. Say for AWS, GCP, or Microsoft? Do you get reimbursed? A Bonus? How much? Does it differ based on the difficulty of the cert?

I’ve worked at a lot of places and rarely are bonuses given out anymore. Kind of a job requirement now. Reimbursement is the minimum expectation. Slalom handed out a wrestling style trophy/belt of you knocked out all of the architect certs.

Well the bonus you get from getting one of those certifications is that you can get a big raise and go work for one of those companies. I left the big four and came to AWS. Having more certs means more growth. What most people don’t realize is Their firm is most likely a partner to one of those tech companies and can get a lot of training for free. Also you can buy practice tests and get a voucher and training for less than $1000. I would invest $1000 in myself for the opportunity to have more choices. But most firms would cover that.. It may depend on how cool your boss is LOL

Reimbursement only and if your people manager wants then a shoutout and peers emailing you saying congrats, wow, well done.

You can expense the cost and a pat in the back

For those complaining: are you interested in tech firms or IT exits to industry?

Getting certs beyond the intro course can add tens of thousands to your market value upon exit.

I got $250

PwC offers vouchers that cover the cost of certification for at least some certs, and depending on timing and type of cert this year they offered $250 & $500 bonuses

It is paid for, but continuous education and improvement is just part of the job, to me.

I got a sticker

Hey tech folks. I'm mentoring a software engineer graduate and wanted your opinion. I had him write out his 5 year goals to me and it's about finding his niche and specializing in 5 years. Would you say that's too early to think about specializing? My thoughts are to say it's OK if you find your passion and want to specialize, but it's also OK to generalize and pick up more skills and experience in different aspects of tech.

At what point is it too late to switch to a career in programming? I studied supply chain management in college, but more and more I find myself wishing I had done computer science. I have been working as a business analyst for almost a year now and am curious if that is a realistic career jump. I have no programming experience, but it just seems way more glamorous than supply chain consulting. Curious what your guys thoughts are/if anyone has made a similar jump.

I’ve been considering to stop pursuing the CPA certification and instead wanted to focus around more IT driven certifications like CISSP. I already have my CISA. I’m just not as committed to the accounting world as I used to be making it hard to study and put my full effort into the CPA. Has anyone ever felt the same that it was best to change paths if your not truly committed to the long road of the CPA?
