What exactly does BigLaw Litigation consist of? I’m assuming not PI/Med Mal/Etc.? Have always wondered how far this area reaches.

It’s about the complexity of the matters and/or the dollar amounts at stake for clients more than the specific area of law. That’s what’s justifies the high rates. Typically $5-10 million at the low end up to the billions. Pretty much all class actions (mostly defense, but more firms are jumping into p side with lit funding) and bet the company stuff, for instance, are big law.

Fwiw, I've seen some wrongful death matters in Big Law if they are large/complex, i.e. a complicated toxic tort case. I know a Big Law partner who built a career on toxic tort defense.

No! There must be a handful of Big Law partners who had the same idea.

Mainly securities, IP, other multi-million dollar issues. Lots of securities.

You must be in NY. Other big city practices are more diverse.

I do below avg work for her because she consistently gives me little time to do huge tasks (and usually at odd hours) and doesn’t involve me in what finally goes to the client (and I have no visibility on the client’s expectations, response, feedback, expected timeline). Thinking about a move back to my home state (Ohio). Currently a fourth year in DC biglaw (litigation). Is Jones Day the only player in Columbus as far as biglaw? (Liberal, if it matters). Any other firms I should be aware of that pay decently well/have sophisticated work?

I don’t work THAT much (1800h/year is my target), my weeks are usually 10-11 h m-f.

However, I’m still feeling overwhelmed and close to burnout, and I’m quite ashamed of it when other associates hit close to 3000h.

It’s not the hours, it’s the extreme perfectionism and level of detail expected that makes me hyper stressed when working, all the office politics and working for partners responsible for more they can handle and need explaining like kids, but take all the $ at the end of the day 🙄

I’m a fourth year cap markers US associate in London. Started my career here after law school and looking to lateral back to a firm in the US. Genuinely open to anywhere but have long term prospects of making partner, and conscious that majority of my practice here has been unregistered work. Should I just head back to NY (went to law school there and barred in NY) and gain more SEC registered experience should I be looking for more secondary markets since long term would not want to stay in NY

I’m a 3rd year lit associate in BigLaw and fortunate to have earned substantive early experience—taking depos, arguing discovery motions, full ownership of briefing, case management while working closely with the partner on the strategy. I burned out and the pandemic reminded me it’s nice to see my husband. I’m considering a (nonBigLaw) transactional role. I’m nervous- of course I have transferable skills, but I’ve been living off my lit skills. Any advice or has anyone else felt this way?

Thoughts on a joint trust or two separate trusts with your spouse? Our goal is:

1) asset protection. We’d hope the trust would hold assets such as our house, cars, etc.
2) use it as a vehicle to pass onto our future kids, for whenever we die.
