What exactly happens if I accept an offer to a firm and then retract if I receive a better offer shortly after?

Trial by combat

Seriously, trial by combat.

You burn the bridge with the first firm you accepted and proceed with your desired firm. Nothing to concern yourself with except awareness of the burnt bridge. It’s not ideal, but it’s also not the end of the world. If the second firm is a better fit, then do it! Congratulations on the new role.

like

Thank you, I appreciate it.

You can take the new better offer. Original firm may try to negotiate with you if they really want you but don't count on it. You will probably burn a bridge with the original firm . . . Don't count on applying there in the future.

They made it pretty clear that Friday would be the latest because they have another candidate who they don’t want to lose and they said they’re pretty certain this other firm will offer me a position.

Life goes on and eventually you die

like

No way, I thought that was a myth🤣

Don’t believe the lies about burning bridges. This will be your experience when you go back:

LMAO

Basically nothing. But yeah, the first firm might be a little salty for a year or two, don’t count on being able to work there again in the near future.

They sue you for specific performance and you have to work for them

Boom 13th amendment

funny

Do they actually go through all that work tho lol

I was being facetious 😂

My real answer to this is that there's a bunch of things that could happen and a bunch of things that won't happen so just if you're going to do this do it in the most courteous way possible and if they still don't like you you really can't control that

About one week after I started my first job in industry, my boss told me that my role was wrong during the selection/hiring process, and asked me to change it in my job profiles. I had no idea about the differences between the roles. Some time after that, I discovered that my correct role was in fact one level lower than the one stated in my job offer/contract. Is this legal? I feel like I was fooled by the company. I live in the UK.

Does anyone work at a firm that does not offer year-end bonuses? I’m currently at a 25-50 person firm in a major market (CA) that mostly operates on big contingency cases. There were firm-wide paycuts at the beginning of Covid (still in effect). I’ve billed in excess of 2,000 hours and am feeling both cheated and a real lack of motivation.

Anyone else experience anything like this? Recommendations (other than leaving)?

Left my old firm on good terms but as time has passed and with therapy have realized how toxic it was. Just read that they were disqualified from a big case they were probably very excited to get due to a conflict of interest issue. Trying not to feel too much schadenfreude. That’s all.

After practicing law for 8 years, I’m ready to exit the practice altogether. I’ve wanted to do it for years, but never had the guts and, as we know, golden handcuffs are real. I’m a creative (screenwriter/director/graphic designer-dabbler), but have no clue what job I can do to make money while pursuing my passions. Is there a creative corporate role that can leverage legal experience (besides consulting)? No clue where to start. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Want to get the perspective of younger attorneys. We’re a 4-attorney firm (2 partners, one associate, one OC) looking to add a 5th attorney. I left a mid-sized litigation firm on the East Coast where I was a partner to open my own firm. Decision was driven by quality of life. We are a civil lit firm. We don’t have billing requirements per se. We have expectations, but we’re reasonable - big on flexibility & quality of life. What are young associates looking for when evaluating job opportunities?
