Trial by combat
Chief
Seriously, trial by combat.
You burn the bridge with the first firm you accepted and proceed with your desired firm. Nothing to concern yourself with except awareness of the burnt bridge. It’s not ideal, but it’s also not the end of the world. If the second firm is a better fit, then do it! Congratulations on the new role.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
You can take the new better offer. Original firm may try to negotiate with you if they really want you but don't count on it. You will probably burn a bridge with the original firm . . . Don't count on applying there in the future.
They made it pretty clear that Friday would be the latest because they have another candidate who they don’t want to lose and they said they’re pretty certain this other firm will offer me a position.

Life goes on and eventually you die
No way, I thought that was a myth🤣
Don’t believe the lies about burning bridges. This will be your experience when you go back:

LMAO
Basically nothing. But yeah, the first firm might be a little salty for a year or two, don’t count on being able to work there again in the near future.

They sue you for specific performance and you have to work for them

My real answer to this is that there's a bunch of things that could happen and a bunch of things that won't happen so just if you're going to do this do it in the most courteous way possible and if they still don't like you you really can't control that
