I did internal consulting at a major bank and it was terrible. Pay levels were mediocre (maybe on par with big 4) and there was high turnover on the team. Tons of people disliked it but there weren't enough decent roles elsewhere in the org to move into instead. Certain folks who fit into the culture and way of working did well. Everyone else just stuck around for one promo and then left

Almost got into one as well (declined to go with another industry) but curious to know more what you meant by “terrible”?

Interesting, my experience doing internal consulting at a major bank after several years in external consulting was quite different from yours. My team was super supportive, had a lot of opportunities for me to take advantage of and the pay was definitely better than that in the big 4 at least for the first 5 years given the same rank and everything. But i agree with you that it’s not for everyone, it takes a certain type of folks to enjoy internal consulting.

I would break this down in a few areas. Work: a strong focus on the financial services sector obviously. If you have enjoyed those projects in the past, then this might be for you. I know a lot of folks that prefer specializing in a particular sector and not have to learn a new business or sector every once in a while. Lifestyle: more often than not a 9-5 job. If you prefer taking it a bit easier on yourself and not have to work late nights too often, then this might be a good fit for you. I know some folks that prefer a more stressful and intense work environment. Pay: pretty decent given the amount of hours you work on avg, but as a tradeoff, you probably won’t be seeing huge spikes in salary increases. Just my two cents, hope that helps

Hey team - would appreciate your feedback I'm currently a SC at Guidehouse making ~$100k. Very bored but considered a strong employee and on manager track. I have an offer to join D GPS as an SC with 20-30% more pay. The work would be similar. If I stay at Guidehouse I would likely apply for an MBA in Fall 2021. But if I join D, that would delay an year and I would apply in Fall 2022. What would you recommend from MBA and career sense? At this point, I'd be applying for an MBA at age 31/32.
