I get it. That said, be careful with this. I would have real concerns about a direct-elect candidate who was worried about these things. It’s not that perks aren’t important, it’s more that needing a black car to come to an interview or expecting the firm to pay your club dues doesn’t feel like a cultural fit.
Amex platinum and access to two major airline clubs will run you ~$2k pa total. I’m not saying the firm shouldn’t cover clubs when traveling, I’m just surprised these feel like perks worthy of selecting a firm.
We have platinum amexes, first class travel, great hotels in policy and amazing healthcare. But not sure why it would be a decisive factor unless money was equal and you like the people at both places. Pretty far down the stack in decision criteria.
Tough crowd
Where are you that a country club membership, first class flights, and an airline club are your perks?
Welcome to FB, OP. 😂 We’re less concerned with your personal situation and more so in talking amongst ourselves.
That being said, why don’t your share the specific firms you’re looking at; I can’t imagine any of the MBB or B4 (I’ve worked at both) requiring you to fly economy to a far off international location. If a client restricts it per their specific travel policy — and generally the client policies I’ve seen have allowed business class international over a certain flight duration — I would expect you could pay for the difference out of firm dollars. I did that when traveling coast to coast.
I don’t have a problem asking for the complete benefits package, especially when evaluating an offer (past the interview stage). I couldn’t care less about black cars and interview hotels. Anyone can treat you like a VIP once.
I’ve even asked for, and received, the complete healthcare drug coverage from a prospective employer. I have a family member with a chronic condition, requiring a $2,000 per month drug. If that wasn’t covered by insurance, I would not have taken the offer.
Personally, I feel that after I answer why they should hire me, I can ask “why should I come and work for you?”. And the employer should tell me about all they have to offer, from salary and bonus, to free coffee in the office. It all tells you about the quality of life in the workplace. And that’s definitely a business. culture issue.
Think you’re placing too much emphasis on perks. Make sure not to come off this way if you bring this topic up with the firms that made you an offer.
I’ve not mentioned, nor would I ever to recruiters. Hence asking this group of esteemed leaders.
I understand OP’s POV… it is indication of firm’s culture and would matter with other factors being equal. We are all smart enough to do our math and realize these perks are not financially significant but it would be a deterrent if you have to wait for Uber at JFK after a 6 hr connecting fight.
We’re encouraged to use Uber, but nobody is going to stop a partner from using a car service.
I've not heard anyone sending a limo for the interview :D
Black car is not a limo tho
Thanks,,,
I think to the point above it’s overall culture. I would never ask this to the recruiters hence here. Ty BCG for sharing. :).
Prior to current role I was at a firm that didn’t permit business class for international or allow hotels upon arrival in India. Spend 16 hours on flights, have to front a hotel room so I can sleep,,,it adds up.
Again, this is a small nugget of overall picture but was curious. We’re all smart and know that expenses getting out of control ultimately hurts in both good times and bad- but having spent the last year fronting virtual lunches, etc to drive morale it is top of mind.
I consider most of my “perks” ones that at least some directly support my people although they’re directly provided to me.
Yeah I’m sympathetic to the need for those changes (90 mins is really a very reasonable requirement) but honestly a good demonstration that perks are overvalued even by rational and smart people
Million dollar plus total comp I assume, would these perks add up to 5% of your total comp? Not trivial but at those levels you can take a pass and hope for the best
