Repaint any walls their original color (if you modified and your lease says to do so)
Don’t leave furniture / junk / trash behind
Do a decent job cleaning the place
Just by doing this i always received my full deposit back
Or you could just consider the security deposit as a decorators fee and do what you want! I’m always upset about how much I spend trying to steam the carpets, patch and paint any holes, etc. to still get charged in the end, that I just consider the security fee a wash at this point.
I’ve left the walls scuffed and chipped, and never had an issue. I always thought painting was a given after a tenant moves out. Obviously a massive hole is another story, but holes from a TV mount, scuffs from arduous sex, etc. have always been covered.
Request a walk-through with your landlord prior to your lease expiring. The landlord will note all things that need to be repaired. Regardless if you do the walk-through or not, your landlord has 14 days from when you vacate the apartment to provide you with an itemize list of any damage to the apartment, the money landlord is withholding to cover those repairs, and how much of your security deposit you’ll get back. If the landlord does not do this within 14 days then landlord cannot retain your security deposit. However if there is significant damage landlord may sue you to recover the costs of the repairs.

I’ve always had a cleaning service come through, removed all items/furniture/trash, and patched any holes I’ve placed in the wall. Always gotten my full deposit back - 3 apartments at this point
Usually Always cleaning (I cleaned my place except for a stove that I couldn’t get the grease off of and they deducted since it was deemed excessively dirty), any excessive damage to walls apart from hanging things, paint if you painted the walls (but if you didn’t, this won’t be deducted), and removal of furniture or junk if you left anything.

Can't you use security deposit to pay last months rent?
Legally no, though I’m sure if you deal with a landlord directly it’s different.
