What happens if you miss Jury Duty due to client commitments? Any advice on how to get out of it is greatly appreciated!

The judge isn't going to give a damn about your client commitments. You should've shown up- how clueless are you?! I hope you get hit with a hefty fine for this moronic act.

Jury duty takes precedence over everything even work. Work will excuse you for this

There seem to be a lot of hysterical recommendations here. To the OP there's a difference between serving your one day of jury duty (which is an inconvenience that any project manager, partner or client should and will understand) and being seated on a trial which I agree is a far more problematic and disruptive situation. First, just showing up for jury duty doesn't mean you'll even be asked to sit on a trial. Many go, the day passes and it's over. If you do get selected for a jury, there is a process known as voir dire. You'll learn about the case, including the estimated timeline. You will also have the opportunity to indicate any hardships at this time. You can play the bigot / prejudice card mentioned above, but I think the much smarter play to be honest. Your occupation is a consultant and your travel expectations are 80%, therefore sitting on a jury for a trial of any duration will be detrimental to your firm, client and career. These people get it and you'll be excused from service. Really not a big deal.

Unless you deferred it ahead of time, you were legally obligated to show up and work has to comply...

If you want to get out of jury duty, just convince the attorneys that question you that you have some kind of bias. Easy one is you hate cops or, in my case, there was a tenant suing a landlord and I told them I hated landlords and that I thought we should live in a communist society where nobody is allowed to own land

We had a consultant who had to fly back from work overseas for jury duty, it's not something you can skip.

What if I told you ... that clients have to serve their jury duty, too?!

So the solution turned out to be quite simple (ya'll make a note of it for future reference) -- one that the county does not like to advertise for obvious reasons. There's a number on the letter for FAQs etc, which I called and hidden in the range of options is one to request a postponement. I provided my details and got an automatic 3 months postponement. Probably won't work all the time, but since this is my first one, it worked. Will deal with it when I get another letter in 3 months- crisis averted! (I have two weeks of international client travel plus hard deadlines).

Just show up. The chances of ending up on a jury are so small and there is even a charge code for it. This is the real world and the law.

My SO is a lawyer. It's hard to make excuses, especially trying to get away with the line that you didn't get the letter... It's been used 1000s of times before. If you get a bitchy judge, he/she can make your life complicated.

Just be glad you weren't called for grand jury duty. You have to serve a specific day every week or two for 6 months (at least in my state).

I had jury duty last year. I showed up and was dismissed in two hours. The questions they asked to "strike" people from the jury were so vast that it was next to impossible to not have a reason. They also sometimes mention if you have work commitments bc they don't want distracted people. Trust me, there are a bunch of retirees who want this.

You can generally defer up to 3 times

Unless you want your ass thrown in jail, you have to show up... to get out of it is pretty simple... they will ask you a bunch of questions, especially for a criminal case, and you will know which ones will get you thrown off the jury if you answers "no".

I haven't missed it yet. It's on Monday. Just googled it: seems like the chances of them taking any action is slim. There are different views out there e.g. the letter can get lost in the mail unless it's sent by certified mail. https://www.google.com/amp/ask.metafilter.com/128938/What-really-happens-if-you-skip-jury-duty/amp

I've never, anywhere I've lived, received a jury summons via certified mail. If you just ignore it, they will probably send another summons, then if you still fail to show you'll probably get a visit from a deputy, and if you still don't cooperate they may hold you in contempt of court and/or issue a bench warrant for your arrest, which will get entertaining if you're pulled over or cross a country border or return to the US (some, including Canada, can also check outstanding warrants and criminal records when you arrive and deny you entry). This may vary from state to state but the general theme will apply pretty much everywhere. If you really don't want to serve there are proper ways to do it listed upthread, but no-showing is one of the least useful ways to go about it.

You can pass a few times, but they don't care. You'll eventually have to serve.

Merrill Advisors - I have a client with an account at Merrill and am told that they have a money fund available which insures up to an aggregate of $5,000,000 in FDIC coverage. Is this a CDARs program and they are misinformed or does such a program exist and what is it called? I was told $5mm in coverage with daily liquidity which obviously wouldn’t apply to CDARs. Many thanks!

Touchy feely client asked me today, “how come you never talk about your family? Don’t you get along with them? Family is so important to me.” I’ve been feeling particularly alone and lonely during Covid, but even before... I’m 50, single, never been in a relationship, really feeling kind of down at this “midpoint” in my life. I kind of keep people at arms length especially clients I’ve never even met in person. 😔 How do you even respond?

Hi guys, I am due to start working at EY soon within audit. I will be commuting to the office by train when in the Birmingham office. This will be from Leicester. Usually if a commute is about 1.5 hours+, Mazars authorises hotels. Is there a similar policy at EY? When not in the office I would prefer to drive to clients, not sure if me being in Leicester affects whether they will tell me to suck up an extended commute? Would a mileage claim be from the office to the client? Thanks!

Very thankful to have a week each month remote on my project. Let's be real, we don't need to be on the client site every week.

Hi 🐠, need some advice. Was told by my manager that time doing research (for info related to my client) is not client billable and has to be charged to the overhead code. This strikes me as fundamentally wrong, esp bc this is a flat rate project so the hours will just affect my utilization / internal metrics, not how much the client is billed. I asked for a non-billable code that counts towards utilization but was told my utilization is fine even though I’d be billing <40hrs & to use OH code

Take PTO during project or roll off then PTO?

A flat fee project contract is currently about a month over the expected end date, and it’s still going. Is it reasonable to ask for the remaining balance now vs end of project which was what was agreed upon?

I am am Asian woman. I started a discussion about how we could improve our diversity and inclusion efforts on my UX team. I offered a possible solution. Out of a team of 14, only 4 responded, 2 female in support, 2 male with lukewarm and hostile responses. The silence is deafening from the rest of the team (all male). I don't want to be here anymore. I attribute this to being in Utah, majority white. Is it like this everywhere? Or if I change jobs, will it be better?
