I had this happen to me. Here's what I did. I wrote a very professional email to the recruiter of the firm with the signed offer saying something to the effect "this firm is my top choice... from my interviews I really like the culture and the people... however I was presented with this other offer... to turn the other offer down would put me at a financially disadvantaged position... would you be able to match their offfer?"
They will probably want to talk to you and sell you on all the benefits of their company/firm. But you have to be firm in saying that you want to do what's best for your career and financial success. If they can't match and the other offer is significant enough, they should be able to understand.
By the way, this happens all the time. Nobody should really black list you or burn any bridges with you for doing what's best for you. If that's the case then I would reconsider working for them anyway. Best of luck!
No prob. It was roughly a ~6% increase in base comp and ~42% increase in signing bonus.
If you DM me I'll give you exact figures. I'm paranoid about posting this stuff publicly.
You renege on the signed offer
Coach
The US has efficient breach of contract. You only would have to pay actual economic damages to them, which given they likely have a runner-up for the position, probably amounts to $0
You could always withdraw the offer. You may burn the bridges, but do what is best for you. Congrats!
What if I would love to join the first accepted offer but get the higher paid second offer, and only want to leverage the second offer to bump the first offer? I am not sure if they will rescind the offer as this looks bad. I would imagine negotiating after acceptance is different than prior to sign the offer.
