What happens when you literally CANNOT get tasks or assignments done because of other tasks or assignments? For context I’m out of town for work, had three 14 hour days with the client/ product, now have two different decks due today and am traveling home by air until 10pm. My bosses attitude is like “well why not?” about this whole scenario. Trying to work on deck in my downtime but also need to like…eat…and sleep.

That sounds so terrible. First, I’m sorry your experiencing this. You are a human, you can only do what’s possible and this is an absurd situation. Second, you need to set boundaries. You are going to kill yourself to get these decks done and they’re not even going to be quality work. No offense, but under that much stress and lack of time, no one is going to be performing at their best. Unfortunately that means telling your boss no, whether they like it or not. Why do the decks need to be done now? Can one wait? What’s stopping them from pushing the deadline? Third, you need to start applying for new jobs immediately. This is so toxic and the only person who is going to continue to suffer is you. No job or salary is worth your mental health. And on top of that, if you’re being forced to sacrifice quality just to get shit done in an unreasonable manner, you’re putting your reputation at risk. This is a bad job all around— if this is the norm there is no winning here. Best of luck, I hope it works out.

You’re not a failure. Sometimes things just don’t fit. I speak from experience. I went through this same situation and I told myself to suck it up and power through. Ended up suffering for 10 months all to be let go anyway. Trust yourself. If it feels this bad within your first 30 days that’s a sign. The first 30 days should be onboarding and slow, it’s wild that they are putting you through the ringer so soon. Show yourself some grace, know that it’s okay to walk away and then start applying ASAP!

I'm in this position too (startup that doesn't understand creative that has an impossible backlog of needs). Thankfully I have a manager that's helped me navigate the internal politics/is willing to push back on the unrealistic expectations. They know I'm here for WLB (coming from an equally toxic industry lmao) and not working over 45 on an as-needed basis. I'd be looking if my boss wasn't willing to fight for me.

I'm someone who's incredibly results driven and used to delivering well on a tight deadline, but...the amount of work I'm being tasked with literally spans 4-5 different job roles so I've had to draw very deep boundaries.

I don't know what line of work you're in, but it's very likely that the work can wait. Take care of yourself OP.

like

Yeah, there definitely needs to be some very firm boundaries put into place or just be case of someone testing you knowing that you’re trying very hard to do a good job on your first before your first review. Honestly, I just resigned from my job of 20 years after I got a new boss three years ago who was very much like yours no respect for any personal time or just incredible lack of respect. Sometimes when you get a new job you really just need to ask yourself why that job was available and I think you just found your answer.

like

Im so sorry OP - I can relate to this too well unfortunately. 😭 When I’m in the weeds with tasks and new tasks keep coming - I usually prioritize and communicate it back to my boss and let him know I won’t be able to get to something until other tasks are completed. Usually they get the picture and ask someone else to help with the task until I’m freed up to resume it.

Other times they are pushy and want everything NOW. Then I connect with them to understand the urgency and re-prioritize tasks and also manage expectations. (Finishing the deck asap means product work for the client doesn’t get done til later - they have to be ok with that if they want to push for the deck).

Ive unfortunately found this is the norm in consulting. I’m still figuring out how to set boundaries to preserve my mental health and meet demands

Not helpful except for empathy: I have 100 percent been in the same situation, and what I find most galling about it is it definitely does not go both ways. As a manager I believe if i have a certain expectation of my people, I have to live up to that myself — yet I find that while I make a point of keeping up on responsibilities while I am out for something work-related, the same is often not true of those above: they are traveling and should not be expected to respond or do other work during that time. It’s a problem especially when you have to depend on how others for permission to move forward on time-sensitive things.

I’m having a sit down with my creative directors next week, they have some concerns. I’ve been doing well with my radio and tv assignments but not as well with my collateral and email assignments. I’m having trouble adopting the already established voice of the latter but the tv and radio work I get to create my own voice for each project. Any advice on how to plead my case of having some degree of difficulty and not intentional doing bad work?

Debate:
If you’re interviewing for a new position outside the firm and the interviewer is unavailable after your billable hours (staff augmentation project). Typically for appointments (dentist, doctor), we make up the time outside of working hours. Would you A) block off the time on your calendar as an appointment and make up the 30 min outside of normal working hours
OR B) take 30 minutes of PTO for interview

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??

What do you think cutoffs for fund size categories in VC are? Obviously it’s much smaller asset class than PE, but would something like this make sense:

<50M: microfund
<100M: Seed Fund
<500M: Early Stage (A&B) “Midcap”
<2B: Growth (C+) “Late Stage”
2B+: “Megafund”

Funds in larger categories can do smaller deals, but larger check sizes make more sense for them.
