Getting a homebound student with leukemia finished with his graduation requirements. After working with him for two years he found out only an hour before graduation that he made it! I was the first one he hugged as the seniors marched out of the auditorium. I cried all the way home because I was so honored.

Surviving the roughest school years and remaining in the profession in hopes for better days to come! 🙏🏾

Being a special educator (and first year teacher), I had a teacher come up to me and show me a students’ work- she had been applying what I’ve been working with her on in class and had been so successful. It brought tears to my eyes. I felt so successful and so proud of my student.

A past student came up to me and said I sparked an interest in reading for him in 5th grade. He is now a lawyer for Mike Bloomberg and the student says he owes it all to me.

A student in my creative writing class told me that my class was a safe place for her and that she finally found a place where she didn’t have to hide her weird.

I was approached today in Home Depot by a former student I taught in 1993. He shared with me what he remembered about 4th grade. I am fortunate to work in a district that many of the families stay. I always feel so honored to run into my students! I am proud and blessed to have chosen the education profession.

Having a student enter my classroom wanting to drop out of school and leaving wanting to finish school... hurt my feelings to see him leave and possibility of him going back to that mentality

I had a student start with me (when I taught K-2) and was extremely closed off and reserved. He refused to read aloud and would put his head down and refuse to work.

Over the course of a few months, he opened up to me. By the end of my time with him, he was asking for hugs, telling me he wanted me to always be his teacher, and had made great strides in his reading.

When my former students come and see me after they’ve graduated to thank me and tell me that I’ve made a difference in their lives!

This is my first year teaching, and teaching 5th grade at that. I have a student who was known to not do well on spelling tests. By the end of last school year, she was rarely getting half of the words correct. This student has been working so hard this year, and on Friday, she got all 23 words correct, plus our 2 challenge words. I started sobbing while I finished grading her test. Also her reaction when she found out, just lifted my spirits on what has been a challenging first year.

Anytime a student "gets" it.

When a student told me he wished I was his Dad.

A student of mine who I found out was “couch surfing” with her mom, ie relying on different friends of her mom each night for a place to stay, was frequently absent, but spot on when present, getting her work done perfectly. Her mom complained about pain, she told her to go to the doctor, and they found out it was serious. Mom’s family in Florida was going to take care of them. She was In tears when she told me this after school. As if she didn’t have enough troubles, admin wanted to withdraw her with an F transfer grade. Her counselor and I sweated him, saying she deserved her completed work average for the transfer grade, which was excellent, because she worked hard whenever she was in school in spite of never knowing where she was going to lay down to sleep every night. We won it!

I’m not sure if substitute teacher and Teacher Assistant is included but I think for me is to have the courage to go to a classroom and somehow survive even when it’s hard and helping teachers out if they need me to cover their class.

It doesn’t happen often, is when a student gives you a thank you note
for helping them in class.
