Lordy OP take a breath. There’s going to be a new strain every few months. Relax. And give companies a chance to sort this out. It’s not all about you!

They told me happy thanksgiving and enjoy time with my family

@BCG1, I think the fact that there’s going to be a new strain every few months is why companies should have a less reactive strategy. I fail to see how prioritizing the health of everyone makes it all about me.

It has been obvious for sometime that COVID would be endemic and about ~1k people/day would die for the foreseeable future. We had hoped vaccines would be the magic bullet that would stamp COVID out but because of a combination of some residual risk for the elderly/highest risk and anti-vaxers, we are stuck with this ~1k deaths/day run rate. There isn't any data yet to suggest that this variety has evaded the vaccine or is more deadly. Now kids as young as 5 are eligible for vaccinations (and realistically if the parents want to vaccine their kids badly enough, as young as 3-4 because no is checking IDs), there is no help on the horizon. If you are going to delay reopening the office beyond about the end of 1Q21, you should just admit that you aren't every planning on reopening the office and make plans accordingly. People will have had time to get their boosters and kids vaccinated by then. I guess we could wait until infants are eligible for vaccination but my understanding that is pretty far off and infants are pretty low risk.

Yes… let’s also admit office culture died a Little while ago. Covid just helped everyone realize it. We can build a new digital culture - maybe one rooted in smaller teams that choose to work together. Same way people do online now in social media and gaming. We could have guilds - like a tax automation guild - and project dungeon raid log parties… i foresee a glorious nerdy future.

@pc1, there have been talks about it via the grapevine for a few days now, but today is the first day it has become “official” in the news.

@D1, I agree, I don’t understand why so many companies jumped the gun on forcing their people back into the office. I think for us to realistically get COVID under control the OSHA mandate is going to have to be upheld, and the US will also need to share its surplus of vaccines with poor countries. We are a connected world. If poor countries don’t count the number of infections and don’t have vaccines then the virus will simply mutate there and spread to the rest of the world. Same with rural areas of the US.

What does does under control mean and how will we know when we've made it? Even countries that really did control COVID for the first year with travel bans and lock down aren't able to keep it up now.

It happened just a few hours ago

@Deloitte1, it happened closer to the beginning of November. South Africa referred it to the WHO a few days ago. Then WHO made it official today. Medical folks and government folks have been discussing it for a few weeks.

Companies said that new vaccines for new variants would be easy to manufacture using the mRNA technology. Turns out it’s juuust a little more expensive to have multiple production lines so we only have the one variant of the vaccine until it becomes entirely useless. Then maybe they’ll think of rolling out a new one.

Need some advice. I am super burnt out due to work, covid, etc. My firm offers a 3month internal rotation that is very popular - you keep full pay while having predictable hours & no client work. I’ve always been interested in it and the timing seems right. My main Partner is NOT supportive and says I should take medical leave instead or drop to part-time. He doesn’t have a project for me to work on but doesn’t want me doing anything else. Should I take the role at a risk to this relationship?

First posted this in the H1B bowl, but apparently there are fewer attorneys on there than I hoped. My client is filing a new petition to change employers, and his H-4 family members are stuck abroad because of COVID travel restrictions. Their H-4s don’t expire until 2021. If changing employers invalidates his current visa, can his family still get back into the US on their H-4s? Or do we have to wait for the consulates to open up to file for their extensions before they travel?

I feel like I'm the only teacher in my school who is concerned about covid. Am I alone?
