All good answers. Most design directors I have worked with were able to push the visual part of the work to a whole new level. Plus having a design director in the agency also shows it values the craft, while also expanding the agency’s offering to other areas like branding. Not all agencies have one. But like others have mentioned, they are more tactical than creative directors, and both are extremely important
Design Director is more craft (like Graphic Design), Creative Director is more big picture conceptual (like an Art Director).
Design directors are people we lean on in pitches
design directors tend to be solutions oriented. creative directors tend to be ethereal. both are needed and it comes down to what is right for the brief.
Most Design Directors I meet are very focused on the craft and come up with solutions to design problems.
Creative Directors are focused on the bigger picture, deal more in concepts and bit more abstract. They come up with solutions for brand problems.
