*meaning. The whole point is to try and trick you into joining a rent seeking tribe despite your own personal principles, preferences, and beliefs.
Let me give you an actual example: Laws that place a barrier to entry into market (e.g. Limited taxi medallions/liquor license). These barrier establish a monopolistic quality to certain products/services (taxi service, bars), which in turn allow them to charge higher prices. The premium in prices is called rent, as without the coercive element (licensing), prices would have to be lower to compete.
What if I told you the goal of the Democratic Party was too steal...America!!!
Since Libertarians don't see people and society's problems as blocs but rather the flesh and blood needs of actual individuals they are the least likely to sacrifice principle for party/tribe
I guess I don't agree with lumping in conservative/liberal in the mix. Those 'groups' are more self-identifying labels that are traditionally more fundamental to a specific cause. Conservatives generally would be for a reduced-power govt, which by definition reduces the amount of rent available, this reducing rent-seeking behavior.
Now how each party compromises on policy is a different issue
Cool. Do I choose between the blue and red pills now?
What rent are conservatives/libertarians seeking?
@a1 conservatives typically think that big businesses can and should solve our problems and are prone to doing things like paying subsidies to job creators and hiring contractors to implement mass surveillance programs. Libertarians are mostly opposed to the concept of rent seeking, though a libertarian who owns a gun shop could be accused of reducing the police state in an attempt to build demand for personal protection in the form of personal firearm ownership.
*accused of advocating to reduce the size of police forces*
I wouldn't conflate trying to flatten a progressive tax system with subsidizing businesses.
@a1 I agree, but it is worthwhile to recognize that sometimes policy serves to flatten a tax system and sometimes policy picks a winner in a certain industry, market, or particular company.
A1, no consequences for polluting my drinking water and air for your profits, having gay couples pay more in taxes to fund the military-industrial complex, eliminating competition from immigrants, both legal and otherwise
D1. That's not what rent is.
It is exactly what labor unions are trying to do, protect their inherent privilege from competition by trying to usurp the free market
Once again; I don't think you know what rent-seeking is
the fact or practice of manipulating public policy or economic conditions as a strategy for increasing profits
Google much? Key part is one profiting from coercion. Not only do gay couples not pay more in taxes, even if they do, who is profiting from that?
Preventing gay marriages means they pay more in taxes, which means the government can they dole out more tax breaks for exxon, buy more from Raytheon - more profit.
Freely poisoning rivers and air means more sick kids- more money for big pharma.
1400 mile long wall, more money for construction companies
