If Meta was prohibited from just acquiring all the pieces, then that seems more likely than not. It's been a long, long time since that company did something useful and new that they didn't just acquire.
But they have so much cash, and we're so bad at regulating tech, that I fully expect they'll just buy their way into market share. Arguably they already tried to do that by buying Oculus, they were just way too early and Oculus got infected by the rest of Facebook before it got anywhere useful.
I can't map it out completely, but the more I think about it the less likely Zuck running the Metaverse appears to be
… it would match the existing narrative about tech companies and how they all eventually fail or become shells of themselves.
There was an attempt at a decentralized Twitter in 2019 called Twetch. It even had an algorithm that paid you in BSV in proportion to your contribution to the total ad revenue automatically. It failed because not enough people used it.
If they sell Meta Quest 2 for $50, then that may help with the adoption rate. With the price increase, it's gonna be even harder to convince people to pick it over the current game consoles.
And I heard a totally unsubstantiated rumor the Quest Pro will be $1500. Oof.
