What is a expense ratio for a fund you are ok with? What is the cutoff where it is too high? Asking for a family member who has significant wealth but needs financial advisor. Don’t want them screwed

Great question. I’ve started to structure my portfolios to limit fund fees to no greater than 0.20%. Even for a $1M fund portfolio, this works out to $2,000/year which feels high to me.

ER of 0.2% would be my absolute highest end. I typically don't go beyond 0.15%. Think about it, most broad market based funds have ER of less than 0.05%

And the last time he spoke to his parents about it apparently there’s been some mix ups and so they need to sort thru what’s his etc. (CONT’d in comments)

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

Just ran the numbers and it seems like undergrad and grad school costs will be through the roof when my kids go to school in 15 years. I wanted to try to aggressively pay off my house (400k loan balance) but am now thinking I can’t do that and will have to only throw money at the 529 (100k balance) for 15 years. Thoughts? What would you do?

TL;DR: Social Security matters.

My wife & I are 35. If we quit working today, at 70 we are entitled to a combined $50k in annual SS in today’s dollars. (Source: SSA.tools)

$50k real is significant. Let’s be conservative and say that a 70 year old couple spends $100k per year. That’s SS meeting half of your required expenses.

Current law with current demographics shows that SS can fulfill 79% of benefits into perpetuity.

Assuming SS will disappear means working decades longer than needed
