Tax MD here. I think it’s absolutely worth it if you don’t have the business case for partner or if you’re a subject matter expert. I’ve been an MD for several years, so I don’t know what the starting salary is at PwC now, but I know there are MDs making at least $400k or $500k a year plus bonuses. Bonuses range from $40k to over $100k. At PwC, MDs don’t have a pension, but the firm contributes additional funds to a separate retirement account (I think it’s 8% of salary).
Can MDs chime in with some ballpark numbers or is MD comp also secretive?
Starting around $250k, but varies depending on service line and area/office. Pension depends a lot on years of service, but if you grew up within the firm, certainly well above $100k/year (which is much less than partner pension). Worth it? To me, 100% yes. I did not want to be a partner. Depends on what your priorities are though, as the partnership has a lot of great benefits that matter a lot to some people.

Why do people never mention the service line in these types of posts
Probably depends on your service line
Worth it vs what, is the question. Partner pension is much higher if that is what you are asking but a md pension is still pretty lucrative vs industry jobs.
