I don’t think it’s a conversation about what’s best education wise but rather what’s best for public safety. Everyone I know with kids would prefer sending them to school but they also acknowledge that it would be impossible to practice all the preventive measures. It’s better to start the year off remote than attempt to be in-person and shut down after the first breakout. Also, some families have members with compromised immune systems so their kids would be unable to go to school. So now you have half the class in-person and half remote. Far from ideal but I really believe the only option is to figure out remote learning from the get go. Even if that means sacrificing education quality.

Another lens that makes this issue even more tricky is in low income area. Where some kids rely on free lunch/breakfast to be feed. A lot of these kids also don’t have access to an environment to learn remotely or worse don’t have the support to motivate them.

Tough decision indeed. Based on the very very low risk to children we hope in person is available but understand it is a very personal decision and respect other opinions.

All the things you mentioned are exactly my wife and my thoughts. After weighing those and with a lot of insight from the kids, we are opting for in person if they let us.

We decided to keep our kid home. She just turns 6 and will be in first grade. We mainly base our decision on health because it’s impossible to keep kids in masks all day and distance from one another. We will organize social time with another family who have the same philosophy as ours so they get some social time. My husband is currently a stay-at-home dad so we can do that. We will make it as exciting as possible for her and she seems to be fine with the decision, excited even. Kids are very adaptable as along as we make space for that. However, we all have different situations to deals with. I’m hoping that if enough families keep their kids at home then the low income families or front line worker can send their kids to school so that there are enough space for everyone.

I love the idea of socializing with another family that you trust to take all the necessary precautions. Expanding your bubble to include people that view the virus the same way you do will hopefully mitigate the burn out from a lack of socialization.

I have a student with autism. He is mostly behavioral and at a lower learning level so he has to be in a separate classroom. We try to let him play with the students at recess or join in class parties. He has a sibling that attends school as well. When we were waiting in car line a group of girls talked about how they feel so bad for the sibling because of my student. Thankfully, neither student or sibling heard. But how do I respond to that as an adult? Especially, if they do hear?

We as teachers are not supposed to tell our students what to think, we are supposed to teach our students how to think. To do this, we need to try our best to keep our political opinions and our personal thoughts on issues out of the classroom.
