Been here 9 years. Work life balance to me is very job based. We have a ton of tech and healthcare and government. It all just depends. Same with salaries. Good pay for much cheaper living than New York or SF. So many companies are moving or expanding here. Really a lot of options now. It used to be quite cheap but the housing market has become insane and prices are going up pretty quickly. Most everyone drives given the lack of public infrastructure. To me it is the people and culture - just a nice and friendly city. Weather is great most months (July and august can suck).

July and August are a bless. Thanks to those months, we don’t have many more people coming in.

Driving is an absolute must throughout Texas. You can get around without a car, but it’s terribly inconvenient. You could manage work/airport/groceries without a car but it would not be easy or cheap to do doctor’s appointments, social meetups, outdoors activities ... rideshare is your only option.

Also, if you’re not from Texas you’ll find it take some time to figure it out and fit in. People are super polite but not necessarily nice. It is hard to get a read on people if you’re used to the straightforwardness of a city like NY or Chicago.

I moved here from nyc 7 years ago. It was a major change. People are much slower here- from longer deadlines to getting coffee. Work life balance has never been an issue (I’ve worked agency and in-house here). There is def more “niceness” over bluntness. It’s also very white. Sooooooo many white people. Increasing numbers of Black people leave Austin every year (this is a statistical fact from the city of Austin). It’s something I haven’t gotten used to (or my partner who is from Atlanta). You do need a car unless you live and work downtown, and even then you’ll want one. Rent is crazier every year. My gf moved fe nyc 2 years ago and her 1 bedroom downtown was 2300/month- my first apt here in Hyde park was 950/month. It’s just growing so fast it crazy.

Seems like Austin is the next San Francisco. I was looking into moving there, but the housing costs are exploding. And now with Tesla and Oracle moving in, I keep hearing that it’s only gonna get worse. Really love the city, however. And as others have said, the traffic is really bad.

It’s Hot AF in summer. Around 100°F every day. So make sure your place has a pool.

Also worth mentioning that if it’s 100° during the day, it’s about 97° at night. You really don’t get a reprieve from the summer heat until about October.

Ad agency salaries are not rising at the same rate as COL. If you live anywhere in town, you’re going to pay $2k for a one bedroom apartment and $500/month minimum in car payments/gas/insurance. AND because there are only a few good agencies in town, they don’t promote or give raises as often as bigger ad markets like nyc (they know people want to live in Austin and they know there’s no other agency for them to hop to) My old, amazing boss at GSD&M was there for six years without a raise or promotion. BUT - the city is great, amazing food, culture, and lots of nature things. I’d move there again if my long term goal was to switch to tech.

How do you deal with a girlfriend who wants to spend so much money on food? Mine wants to go eat out like literally once a week every time we hang out. I’ve suggested cooking more which we have done but then it just shifts back to eating out again. I feel like if I tell her I can’t afford it or would rather spend my money on something else she’ll think I’m cheap. Been dating for about a year
