What is more important - being in-house at a large reputable company that will be pretty stable over time, or making a ton of money somewhere (maybe well known or a start up) even for a year or two? I am considering applying to some tech companies for more money, but I work in a pretty stable industry though not making a ton of money.

What will your responsibilities be at the smaller company? I chose a smaller company because I wanted to be a generalist and set myself up for a GC (or deputy GC) role in the future. If you're comfortable being an individual contributor or specialist instead, the larger company can be attractive.

Personal decision. In addition to salary and company reputation, also think about things that are important to you for your long term professional growth. Are advancement or mentoring opportunities better at one company or the other? What’s the volume of work flow, law department structure, level of responsibility for your clients, variety of projects you get to work on, and complexity of legal issues that you face?

I think it depends on how big the TC gap is. What's your TC now and what would the expected TC be in tech?

So I had a first interview this past Friday at a company that I had previously interviewed with and made it to the final round last month. They decided to go with an internal candidate after it came down to me and him. The current role is more senior, and was one I was asked to apply for by the hiring manager, whom I also met with during the last set of interviews. I emailed the recruiter to f/u on Friday and still have not gotten a reply. Should I be concerned?

A 5% raise in light of 1) calling it a “substantial” improvement on last year 2) inflation running above 9% 3) peers at other consultancies getting 10-15% raises in non-promo years is extremely disappointing

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). Can anyone recommend books they’ve found helpful for L&E matters, privacy matters, product matters, or marketing/advertising matters?
