If you're considering a career in marketing, my top piece of advice would be to learn how to write well. Marketing is all about creating compelling content that engages and inspires people to take action, so if you can't write effectively, you'll have a lot of trouble succeeding in the field. Start by reading up on the basics of good writing and practicing as much as you can. It'll make all the difference.

Don’t use other people as your measuring stick for your career growth. Everyone advances in different facets at different paces. I remember being jealous at the internships and early work experiences some of my classmates had, just to see that they’re not free tickets to success and I ended up in a higher role than many of those people in the years following. There are multiple routes to success.

Your team matters a lot - it can break or make the brand and you can either be miserable even if you enjoy the job or thrive depending on your team. Some people are more talented than others - marketing isn’t something you can just learn in my opinion. It takes aesthetic sensibility, understanding human behavior and coming up with the right messaging to sell your product. Although there are a lot of people doing it and it’s a competitive field, many will end up just coasting through their careers.

One piece of advice that I would give someone considering a career in marketing is to be sure that they have an interest in and a passion for the field. Marketing can be a very challenging and dynamic industry, so it is important to have a strong drive to succeed and be able to withstand setbacks. Additionally, having some marketing experience, either through coursework or previous work experience, can be helpful in starting out in the field.

Be prepared for a lot of hard work. Marketing is a very competitive field and it takes a lot of dedication and effort to be successful. However, if you are willing to put in the time and effort, the rewards can be great.

Some general advice that could be useful for anyone thinking about a career in marketing includes studying the field and staying up to date on current trends, networking with other professionals in the industry, and seeking out opportunities to gain experience. Additionally, it can be helpful to have strong writing and communication skills, as well as creativity and an eye for design.

A career in marketing can be very rewarding, but it can also be challenging. It is important to be creative and have a good understanding of the consumer market. A successful marketing career requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn.

Be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. Expect long hours and to think/act fast. Marketing is not for the weak… if I could rewind 12 years, I would get into a higher paying field with fewer hours 😅

In addition to the above (especially about good writing skills) you need to truly embrace a customer focus. If you are in consumer marketing, every trip to the store is an opportunity. If you are in B2B, every moment on Reddit and the like is a customer research opportunity. Always be learning.
