Most consultants are book smart but lacking the real world experience.

Many consultants just make PPTs for a living.

Just like anywhere else in industry, 20% of people do 80% of the work.

Consultancies have just as many low-performers as our clients.

Some consultants will always over deliver even when the assignment was simple. (I’m providing a list when you only asked for one thing.)

Consultants love to make lists.

95% of the time, partners want you to be successful and 80% of them will actively help you with some valuable coaching if you ask. It’s not a “gotcha” game. Despite what you might read here on FB, most partners are approachable and vested in your success.

Remember, you hear the bad stories here when people vent - most people don’t bother to post “my partner gave me a cool pointer today.” I think some of the memes about partners scare junior staff more than they should.

I’ve worked with TERRIBLE partners, but they were just terrible people who just happened to be partners. The vast majority of partners I’ve worked for have been great mentors.

Soft skills will get you much, much farther than hard skills in consulting

But, esp. if you’re technical, you will still need the hard skills through mgr. hard skills are more of a gate: you got em or you don’t, soft skills are what differentiates.

Great all of these are negative :)

Can you define negative for us? People stating that they learned the real priorities doesn't sound negative to me.

I wish I had known, as a 21-year-old, that not all types of consulting are created equal.

I’m now very happy doing strategy consulting work, but only after an unnecessary long slog doing so-called “risk advisory” consulting (euphemism mostly for internal audit/IT audit crap work which is really not management consulting at all.) Undergrad recruiters can be very disingenuous in how they shine up a steamy pile of BS and sell it to unsuspecting, green recruits.

Throughout our legal careers, we’re told to reach out to the partner (or mid/senior assoc if available) if we have questions.

I’m a second year L&E lit associate and the partner wants us running point on all our cases. However, he literally never responds to questions I have on case handling/strategy, and is super vague when he does answer questions

Is this normal? If so, aside from just badgering him (which annoys him), what can I do?

I recently lateraled and I think I actually just hate working for a law firm. Or rather, I hate working in this new reality where it’s normal to bill 200+ hours every month. I was fine doing this when I was doing 150-200 with a few outliers here and there, but now I’m done. How bad does it look to leave a firm after less than six months? Have an interview coming up for a Product Manager role at a startup and want to get more familiar with the product. Their product/website isn’t for all consumers and requires special information to sign up that I don’t have because I’m not the intended audience for the site. Any suggestions on how to get around this? I might be able to fake my way in and provide junk data but don’t know if that looks bad since my interviewers will know I did it to check out their site.

Thoughts on the new Ford Bronco? Is the low mpg worth it? 🤔 would love to hear from people who currently own one

I need a new car and I really love the design and capabilities, but I would use it mainly for commuting/getting around town (besides the occasional off-road excursion on weekends). I’ve done a lot of research but I still am not sure. If anyone has monthly price of owning one that would be great too. I live in CA btw

Between two offers which would you choose?
1. Junior Associate at MBB
2. Strategy & Ops Manager at Tier 2 Tech (e.g. Microsoft, Uber, Lyft, AirBnB, LinkedIn etc)

Currently at a small consultancy and received an offer for one and later stage of the process for the other. I'm curious if people think that one would be an obvious choice in terms of long term comp and growth prospects?

Plan is to exit to Tech eventually anyway but not sure if having MBB brand is better choice in the long run?
