What is public finance? What does a day in the life of a public finance associate look like? Thanks!

Pub fin associate here, as others have said broadly it’s the issuance of tax exempt and taxable bonds to support public infrastructure projects, could be anything from roads, utilities, to hospitals, universities, etc.

It’s similar to loan work, you draft indentures, trust agreements, resolutions, ordinances, and do work with the IRS Code and state statutes. The best part about it is your clients 99% of the time are government or banks. So the WLB is amazing, and I log off everyday around 6:30 and I have never worked a weekend. It’s a small practice across biglaw. But it’s a fantastic life for big law

Is your firm hiring?

Raising capital for government and NPFs through the issuance of often, but not always, tax-exempt bonds. Attorneys provide advice to issuers and underwriters, among others, on the applicable state laws and federal securities and tax laws. Associate draft documents, undertake diligence, coordinate closings, conduct research, sit in on working group calls.

It’s a broad term, but it usually involves managing or accessing government funding. The type of work will vary based on the part of the funding ecosystem you’re in. If you’re at a bank, you could be working with state/local governments on issuing bonds. If you’re in federal government, you could be advising agency financial managers on how to interpret appropriations law. At a power company, you could be working on a deal to secure state funding for new infrastructure.

I have worked in public finance, but giving a more precise answer to your question would require more context from you.

Thanks all! Which firms do this kind of work?

What is the career progression like in PE? At McKinsey where I am now, it’s fairly standardized, about 2-3 years at each level, and up/out model. If can’t get elected partner after 2 or 3 cycles, will likely get counseled out. Partner eligible for senior partnership after 6 years. How is it in PE? Is it up/out as well or can you end up being “stuck” at associate level for 10 years? How likely is it to be promoted, how fast and what happens if you are asked to leave (where do you go next?)

Ladies, I think I overshare when I'm in a relationship and just blab things I should probably keep to myself. I've been through this with 2 exes where I give advice, share knowledge, etc but end up feeling used. I try to be helpful and it just backfires on me when I see them use this for their benefit after we broke up. What kind of stuff should I just avoid sharing? I want to be helpful, but also know my worth and don't want to be taken advantage of.

Also please send me couple of sentences on why KPMG should consider you. Again I have the default version on that, but your own words might be better for your application.

So Covid incentive payments have finally reach my “big law” Midwest firm. We are non cravath and bonuses have generally sucked but this year they’ve basically doubled the bonus structure which is, yes, totally incentivizing me differently. I’m currently on pace for 1950, but if I average 44 hours a week for the rest of the year, I can make 2150, which would give me an after tax bonus of about $30k or enough to pay off the worst of my loans. Worth it?

You ever reply with a confirmation question, but then realize that confirmation probably wasn’t needed at all. But now you find yourself stuck because you’ve put into writing that there is an outstanding question and if you send the docs out, it will seem like you just sent them without waiting for a reply. Just me? Cool 😑

Kindda hard because I’m at a firm with very minimal supervision, but ultimately it’s my fault for not catching the mistakes since I’m not junior enough to use inexperience as an excuse but also not senior enough to do things by myself… Maybe I’m just not a good lawyer?

Time to admit that I hate billable hours because some days I just want to do a bare minimum four hours of work without having to make it up later and not for any high minded ideological reasons.
