What is the best answer for why you want to leave your job if you are currently in a toxic situation?

Stay positive in your answers and I would avoid talking about how you’re leaving a toxic environment. You should be the one bringing a positive mindset as you go into a new role.

Thank you! I always try to avoid the negative but didn't know a way to put a positive spin on the fact that I'm in a toxic workplace.

General conversation track talks to achieving a level of comfort with the current role but feeling a challenge in continuing to drive forward progress due to internal bureaucracy. At this point, I could continue to stay where I am, but it feels like I'd be stifling my potential. Effectively: I'm ready for a change. My current company isn't. I need a change to continue to grow.

Thank you! This is a great way to position it.

It has stunted my career growth severely. In turn I've taken on freelancing and extra courses outside of work, to reassure myself that I know what I'm doing, and I'm good at it. I have glowing reviews from my personal clients, meanwhile at work my Creative Director makes my life a living hell with endless tech debt and his outdated (and detrimental) direction overrules mine, even when my design choices are well within reason and best practice, accessible, UX friendly, etc.

TL;DR I get reprimanded for (respectfully) making the case for legitimate, reasonable, and practical design choices because my CD's ego is more important. I stopped fighting in fear of losing my job.

For an interview specifically, I would mention I hit many roadblocks during production and how I overcame them, not directly blaming my CD even if that was the main cause.

There was not room for me to advance at the organization.

Or I've been honest about it. That I loved my job and the people that I worked with and that I had a leader I didn't click with. Unfortunately, I didn't look forward to going to work everyday so I took steps to find an organization that fit my personality and work style. Note, I didn't get this job as they went with an internal but I got a glowing review from the recruiter about how if another position opens up they want to keep me in mind. And the director connected with me and stated the same thing. So sometimes honesty can be the best policy.

I'm an experienced Generalist/HRBP for an extremely high volume/large org. I have a masters in HROD and SHRM-CP. My role is getting to be more and more transactional by the day, all my strategic projects get pushed to the side by the endless daily fires that are, inevitably, tracking down employees and data entry. I'm actively looking for a new role (preferably Sr generalist etc), but can't seem to stand out among the crowd. Any tips? Louisville, KY.

Do internships count towards years of experience? I held my first design internship in 12th grade (2016), and have since held at least one internship per semester throughout college, all related to my career path - but they were all part time. In my last semester of college (May 2020 grad), I worked as a full time contractor for 18mos. I freelanced after, before working as an FTE the past year.

When asked how many years of experience I have, how should I answer?

Thanks in advance!
