What is the best path to in house for a large corporation? Worth jumping to big law for the purpose of better chances at a better in house job?

Never worked in big law and at my 2nd F10. In-house experience will get you through the door over big law

likehelpful

Yeah, I got my current job over big firm candidates because I had super relevant in house experience even though they had more years

like

I would say just getting your foot in the door early-ish in your career. From my experience, a 3-8 YOE will have an easier time getting into in-house than someone with 15 YOE never having done any in-house work.

But my experience is limited to the transaction side and I can admit it will be different on the litigation side as some companies prefer to outsource the majority of their lit vs some companies wanting to handle things on equal footing with private firms.

This is helpful. Thanks

This will obviously vary by company but my F100 does not place a premium on big law experience. Relevant experience (regardless of where it was acquired) and cultural fit are probably the two most important factors.

FWIW, I got constant client and recruiter interest for in-house positions starting about 3 years in while in a niche BigLaw practice area. I stayed in BL for 10 years or so before jumping and I’d say the majority of my major clients were staffed with former BigLaw and DOJ attorneys, while my smaller clients had a much more diverse set of attorneys.

Maintain your strong relationships. My in-house opportunity came through an old boss. Number one reason not to flip desks when you leave.

I had left my firm for big law and a big pay bump. Big law wasn’t the right fit for me and I didn’t want to go back to a firm, so old boss knew I was open to and available for other roles.

I had submitted dozens of resumes to in-house positions, and heard nothing. My practice was fairly specialized and I don’t think my tier 3 law school was getting past the screening programs.

This gives me hope! Thanks!

Probably yes especially if looking f100. Look at the LinkedIn profiles of the lawyers who work at the companies you want to work at. And remember it is a competition.
