What is the best way to deal with cell phones in class?

I have a charging station at the front of my room. That's the only place phones can be charged. They have to be put there at the beginning of class and cant be taken out until the end of the class. If they have their phone and it goes off or they are using it, that is an automatic office referral.

I tried using a charging station. The idea is that the students have a choice to put it in the station. I listed the school code of conduct requirements in my Syllabus stating no electronic devices are to be used without the teachers permission. I recorded myself teaching the class and students continue to use their phones during class instruction. They did not need their phones because I was teaching computer business classes and we had computers to use everyday. I was working in an alternative setting where the students sign a contract to attend a smaller school setting. The majority of these students where addicted to their phones or social media. It was clearly evident that the phones where a distraction to there learning.

Now I substitute teach and find most of general Ed high school students seem to be able to complete the assigned work but they use their phones too. I been able to have conversations with them too. It is easy to get to know them and help them.

Alternative Ed students on the other hand often prefer to isolate themselves from the learning environment and the cell phone is a perfect escape anytime of the day.

When I taught sixth grade I would collect them at the beginning of class and then they could get them back at the end of the day (we were a self contain class in an elementary school)

like

In 6th I reminded them if their phone wasn’t off I would take it. It then goes to the principal for their parents to pick up. I never had a problem with cell phones after the first test. An occasional forgetting to turn it off happened, but I just said whoever’s phone that is better fix it now.

like

Make them use their phones in class. Different classroom apps for jeopardy or questioning games.

like

But only if your school allows them. Ours doesn’t, which is a bummer because I agree with you for using them for different apps. Maybe our district will finally purchase 1:1 iPads

like

I make it a non issue. If it is out once I warn them. Twice and I take it for the class period. I return it at the end of class. If it rings I just ask that they silence it. I do not turn it in to the office.

like

That is great that you can take the phone. Where I have worked, that is not allowed by the teacher. We were asked to use contracts, contact parents, and involve the administration. But when I involved administrators, parents and contracts they did not resolve the issue.

The better alternative so that I can keep my job was to ignore the problem. I never give up in designing lessons that are engaging but some students refuse to meet expectations.

I learned if I remind them of the code of conduct some would blatantly do something like make a phone call during class and claim they needed to make dentists appointment. This act was completed by a 18 year old .

What I learned is I needed to work harder at getting them to like me so they would not be so disrespectfully.

like

Warning to put it away. Second time I ask to take it for the class. If they refuse the first time I ask i call for security to take the phone. They don’t get to argue with me. When security takes it, it’s for the rest of the day.

I am planning to resign my Indian position and travel to the US by November . I need to land there and apply for a work permit. It will take 2-4 months to get a work permit. Does your school have a protocol or plan of action to assist kids living in traumatic environments or coming out of trauma?

I’ve had 2 kids this year with major behavior issues and work refusal due to trauma. We have 2 guidance counselors to provide behavioral support and that’s about it.

Not CPS issues, more addressing how the student copes.

This is my 5th year teaching (1st grade) and there is a spot opening up next year for the art teacher. Several staff members have suggested I should switch & I'm very open to it.
I'm about to have my 1st baby & I know how being a homeroom teacher consumes me more than I'd like to admit. I know it will be a different beast, but I'm also conflicted knowing I'm not burnt out and could give more in the 1st grade position I have and the grade I feel I do my best in.
Any advice?
