What is the best way to get started with a career in UX/UI design? What is the average salary for a junior design position?

I’d check Glassdoor for the salary range in your area. I’ve gotten offers around 50k in a medium sized city on the east coast and 100k+ in the Bay Area, so location matters a lot when it comes to salary. Best way to get started is to start designing. Not sure what your background is, but the key to getting a job as a designer is to have a great portfolio and to be a strong storyteller. Interviewers will want you to paint a picture of what your process is like, what challenges you’ve faced in the past and how you work with colleagues to solve complex problems. UX work today extends beyond designing screens, it includes research, strategy, writing, content and more (depending on the role), so be sure to touch on the areas where you shine in your portfolio

If you’re willing to pay, General Assembly has a solid UX/UI immersive bootcamp. I’ve seen a lot of people gets jobs after completing that course.

If you are not in a related industry (psychology, design, product, etc) then I would recommend signing up for a program. UX/UI is very in demand but also very competitive with lots of people coming out of bootcamps every month. Your best shot when interviewing alongside these people is to also have official teaching or relevant work experience (taking on freelance work, Internships, apprenticeships, etc). Before you sign up for a program and invest money into thus - make sure it’s what you want to do, go to some free meetups or workshops about it (General Assembly does regular free webinars), talk to some people who work in these roles. Pursuing a career like UX is very rewarding, but because of the competition you need to actually want it and you should make sure you understand what the change means. As a junior I think it’s important to have visual design skills because many junior or entry level roles tend to be generalist positions - so start learning Sketch or Figma (or XD but not a lot of companies using XD currently). See if your city has a local slack group, it’s a great way to start becoming part of the community. In Denver UX jobs average ~85k...low end is $50k which is where most juniors are at. Senior or lead designers are more in the $115-$130k range. My first job out of my masters program I earned $80k - it all depends on company and your relevant experience/portfolio. We pay the junior designers at my company $60k.

I’m graduating in May and was wondering if 45k is a good starting salary for a digital media buyer/planner at a full service ad agency. Would I make more going in-house? What other jobs could I look for with a digital marketing background (1 year of agency internship experience). I also have had an internship in corporate communications.

Waiting for official offer document is stressful. Interviews done. Negotiation done. Verbal offer received. Just filled out app/reference/background documents. Official offer letter is going through legal review. Working honestly on my current project, while trying to time exit is not fun. I'm trying to not sign up for more work because it will feel like a broken promise to my teammates whom I like. Plus, I wonder a little if the official offer letter will have anything outrageous in it.

How difficult would it be to exit into MBB from Big 4 financial services consulting? Obviously it’s dependent on the candidate, but is this a switch one can accomplish without going back for an MBA?

I was caught off guard at my compensation meeting by getting a raise to $100k but also getting a promotion. The raise was decent and it was the minimum I was expecting, but since I got promoted as well I thought the amount should have been higher. We offered a potential candidate $100k for my previous title. For future reference, how can I bring that up without sounding ungrateful and unappreciative? Thoughts?

I need to learn a new way to speak about process improvement and efficiencies. I’ve learned I have a knack for this but it seems like such common sense to me that I struggle articulating this to people who just don’t get it.
