What is the best way to reach out to someone who works for the same firm, but a different office, to gain insight into the work they do and the culture? What do I email them without being awkward?

I’ve been emailed out of the blue by someone looking to transfer to my office who wanted info. It was a non demanding, polite, and humorous note so I responded like a human being, and gave them a few of the highlights they were looking for. Turned into a friendship, they transferred to town, and we all lived happily ever after. Honestly, we’re all just people trying to get by, this doesn’t need to be complicated.

Hopefully for can go to a national training or training in another region and meet some people there.

Email them and ask if they’d do a call with you as you’re thinking of moving there (?) and want to get some insights into the office, clients, culture (whatever that means...), etx

I think that is how you phrase things. Talk to your Partner or ED or whoever is in charge of your group and say you’d like to find out some more about another group overseas. Maybe they’ll say to contact EY Mobility to get the process started or maybe they’ll help facilitate contact with that office through the Partner channels. The whole point is not to blindside your own group. I’ve transferred offices, I’ve moved cities, I’ve left the firm and come back, etc so I’ve been down this road. It is ALWAYS appreciated to have your own group facilitate the transfer and not have your own group find out you are are shopping around without them knowing. I’ve always found the firm is much more likely to try to keep good and happy employees and sometimes a transfer makes employees happy. Always remember the “business need” though. How does it benefit the firm to move you? Try to phrase everything in that direction, you are doing it to be a better employee and help the firm.

This! Start at home so your group isn’t blind-sided

I’d call them prob. Idk that’s a weird question over email

Thanks for all the advice! Even if the people I contact forward my email to their partner, it’s not a big deal because I’m not being sneaky about it. I’ll be surprised if they do and I certainly wouldn’t want to work with people who can’t use their discretion and feel like they have to push everything to a partner. It’s one thing if they ask me if they can put me in touch with their partner or suggest that I reach out to them, but it’s something else if they are simply telling just to tell. What’s the goal of telling? I mean, I’m not asking something out of the ordinary or illegal. There are bigger fish to fry or however the saying goes. I’m simply doing research and getting information, so I can make an informed decision 😊

Ok, I’ll email saying what D1 and SA1 suggested. EY1, my counsellor is aware of my interest and is the one encouraging me to reach out to people. It’s probably them trying to teach me to network, as this is so out of my comfort zone. They keep reminding me whenever we meet. I’m not looking to transfer just yet and looking more for a secondment opportunity. I’ve heard stories of people transferring and leaving our country’s firm, only to hate it in the new place because of the very different work culture. They were unable to come back, because their position was filled and there was no longer a need. Hearing this has made me think that going on secondment is a way for me to test the waters and if they like me and I like them, it can turn into something permanent. Does this happen or is this just wishful thinking in my part? I know EY has a Global Exchange (?) program where successful applicants can work 3 months somewhere else and was told that a lot of people who get selected probably have networks in those countries. Not sure how true it is though. This is also why I want to each out. PwC2, I can ask people on here, but you know, it’s a hit or miss and there are trolls lurking lol

I would just shoot them an email telling them a little about yourself and your interest in the country/city they live in and that you would like to learn about their experience there and the work that they do

I don’t now, if you ask around enough people you’ve got to find someone who knows someone at the office right? Personally if I got a random email, even from someone within the same firm, asking me for info about my group or about my office, I’m deleting or forwarding to my partner saying “how would you handle this?” and then you’re busted anyway. Safest route is always to talk to your counselor and push it up that way, then your group can help facilitate any transfer instead of being blindsided by it.

Why are you suspicious though?? The email would literally probably say “hey, I’m an xxx in xxxx office. I got your email from xxxx and wanted to reach out to learn more about your office/department/team. Do you have any availability to have a short chat about the culture or opportunities? I’ve heard cool things about your team and I’d appreciate it. Hugs and kisses, Curious person”

I unfortunately don’t have the opportunity to attend training with people from that office, as they are across the globe. I was thinking randomly just Skype-ing them would be weird and was hoping to email them to request for time. I’m not sure how to request for their time, given that we have never been in contact and I literally found them on LinkedIn. It’ll be much easier if I knew someone who knew someone in that office, but I unfortunately don’t, so any advice on how to phrase things will be very much appreciated!

It’s not awkward if you look cute on linkedin profile. Otherwise, it’ll be awkward regardless

Thanks PwC 4 for putting it in perspective 👍 You are right, we are all “people trying to get by” and sometimes just basic humanity and friendliness can solve any problem. I must admit I’ve been jaded by a horribly executed attempt to change tax groups in the past. Two partners ended up getting into a pissing contest about who was poaching who’s employees and I got stuck in the middle, with a denied transfer and a now angrier boss than before for my attempt to flee. So yes, I rescind my prior advice, it does not have to be a big ordeal. Find someone on the network in your dream office and reach out and be a human. Godspeed!

Does anyone do extra work for your company that you are not being compensated for? I’m not talking going above and beyond. I joined our newly created ESG committee and instead of just a volunteering role to channel my passion, it has turned into steering ESG strategy.
