At my single-tier biglaw firm, it’s about $130k

like

Dependent on firm. Generally the less new equity partners are paid the lower the buy in.

like

AMLAW top 10 firm, and we have 3 tiers. $100k per tier

like

Yeah. From how it’s been explained, you start at 1 and every few years or so you move up. Higher tier = more shares = more money

Single tier Biglaw ~$250k

like

I’m at an AM100. 800k buy in

like

I’m only a 3rd year so I have no clue how it all works but that is what the buy in was last year…or so the senior associates say 🤷‍♂️

This thread is reinforcing my decision to seek a promotion to counsel instead of partner at my single-tier partnership firm.

like

At Pearson Hardman. 1 million buy-in.

funny

No loans allowed either. Must bring a check

like

Depends on the firm.

Obviously 🙄. do you have anything helpful to contribute? Like some examples?

Hi all,

Will be joining BCG (Gamma) Seattle office soon, would appreciate everyone's input on a few things:

1) Planning to head into the office on the first day instead of onboarding remotely, assuming that I'll get to meet a lot of new & current folks in the office, is that a fair assumption?

2) Are you traveling/in office a lot at this point, or still WFH mostly? Any advice for someone onboarding in this heavily remote enviornment?

Thanks in advance!

Received a windfall and don’t need to work for money again. Want to quit my toxic BL gig right this moment but I am handling a handful of clients on my own who need a ton of help getting their affairs in order + have closings pretty much every week through year end. Responsible/not burn bridges thing to do would be to give notice now and finish out the year but now I have 0 motivation to do anything other than to rent a beach house and relax

Current mid level lit associate at an AM Law 200, big by number of attorneys but not true “big law” firm. What is the practicality of a “lateral” move to a true heavy hitter at a secondary office like Miami. Can check some boxes with current billable, moot court, law journal, but lack the stellar grades. T50 law school.

I’m an IP associate (focused mainly on trademarks) in an AMLaw 200 firm (slightly below NY market pay) and I’m curious to know what IP groups (mainly trademark related practices) at V50 firms are like. My practice is relatively chill. No major fires to put out - steady and predictable 8-9 billable hours a day. I can generally not work on weekends. Am I at a unicorn shop or is this normal for Trademark practices?

How do people focus in the office? I'm a first year and I've been mostly wfh since I started and I'm super productive at home - my setup is comfortable, I rarely get interrupted, and I feel like I can stay really focused in my home office.

Our SAs started today, so the firm is making us come in more often. My office set up is so awkward, screens are too small, and I'm constantly getting interrupted. Not to mention the extra time it took to get ready and commute. How do people do this?

How do you bill your time? The busier I am the harder it is to bill. How do people actually bill contemporaneously in detailed terms when you bill 12 hours but literally did 100 different things in those 12 hours. And it’s never slow enough to go back and do it super detailed.

Is there any way to get used to the on-call aspect of this job? My hours are bad but not horrible (200-220) but what is killing me is I haven’t had a single day to really unplug since June. The partner i’m working w/ is the most intense in our group & sees weekends as regular workdays, so I’m getting emails at all hours; e.g. I’ll only bill two hours Saturday but it’s scattered throughout the day on random one offs. I know I should avoid her in the future, but any way to help burn out for now?

What happens once we’re approaching partnership toward 7th or 8th year? What if you don’t make partner? Are most firms “up or out”? If so, how can I ever expect to suddenly have a book worth millions to support making partner? I swear that long weekends do not exist for lawyers. Every Friday before a long weekend everything starts going nuts or I get pulled into some deal that is trying to close as soon as possible. I would like just one long weekend where I didn’t have to work on some dumb thing or to worry about staying near my laptop. Just venting.
