I find the biggest difference to be the aromas of hot garbage pee everywhere in each city. There’s a very nose-y sourness to the sf aroma, that you trade for a fuller-body richness in ny

This is great content

Grew up in the Bay Area (and spent a year of the pandemic there) but live in NYC. It depends on your personality. NYC: if you enjoy a fast pace of life, crowds, going out / partying, eating out frequently; it’s very materialistic (not as bad as LA but not far off), full of high achievers (constant mentality among people of the next thing / step in their life), and very “work hard play hard”; it is the most dynamic city by far (only real global mega city in the US) and you can find anything here. Better exit opps for finance SF: if you want a slower pace of life, better weather (esp outside SF), more outdoor activities (hiking, skiing, running, surfing, etc), a way less materialistic and more academic environment then it’s the place to be. If you like going out / partying it’s not terrible but not comparable to NYC. Food scene is 2nd best in the US so not to large a difference there although NYC has more high end spots due to sheer size; if you are Asian, you will never feel like a minority in the area (SF is 35% Asian; Bay Area is 25% Asian and many cities in Silicon Valley are above 50% Asian - as an Asian myself it was very different visiting Chicago and many areas of NYC where people don’t know your cuisine / culture). Better exit opps for tech Price is about the same and you have strong networks and high achievers in both places - you won’t go wrong with either, but you know best what sounds more appealing to you.

Thank you so much! I will keep this in mind

Wlb-sf typically better given surrounding chill tech culture/opps. Network/exit opp-if tech, sf much better given you will likely get work xp in industry which is very helpful. If FS/CPG/other nyc better. Exit comp in tech is typically much better. PE opps better in nyc but still available in sf with tech focus. Price-about equal at this point, used to be sf more $ Culture/qol/etc-nyc is much much more fun for most ppl given food/entertainment /nightlife/dating. If outdoor activities a big priority for you then sf has a big edge, if not would lean heavily towards nyc. I would choose nyc as it’s a once in a lifetime xp when you’re young unless you highly prioritize working in tech and/or outdoor activities.

Good answers here. I lived in NYC from like 24-28 and then moved to SF. I miss nyc a lot but quality of life here is a lot better for me with the weather/nature/more laid back lifestyle and job prospects for my husband are much better. I wouldn’t give up my years in NYC and my first year out here I went back to nyc like 6 times (haha) but for me this is a better long term place.
