What is the difference in being a MD at Accenture vs a Partner at PwC?

This post is well timed for me personally. Currently a B4 D (PwC) with a standing MD offer from ACN. I sincerely love my current practice, my colleagues, and the way we deliver. I’m a high performer, and have been told by my partner that I am part of the succession plan to fill his role upon retirement in a few years. I’ve put a lot into the development/growth of our practice, and seeing it through would be rewarding. Also have very strong relationships in place to all but ensure I’m provided the opportunities to continue to exceed targets. Staying is the safe play. While I’m well positioned and on a ‘quick path’ to partner, nothing is guaranteed. The opportunity with ACN is exciting from a focus/responsibilities perspective, and locks me in as a P for the remainder of my career, there or elsewhere (I’m late 30s). Offer is 40% higher from a base perspective, with the grant and annual VC as a nice kicker. Fear of the unknown and lack of relationships (potential impacts of that) are my biggest concerns. I recognize it would be good to get out of my comfort zone and embrace a new/exciting challenge, but also easier for ACN to cut ties with new MDs than B4 with Ps. They as an organization are almost incentivized to do so before the grant vests. B4 pension a really nice carrot, but could easily boomerang back to B4 later in career and still max at my age. Running through all the what-if scenarios in my head, any guidance would be truly appreciated.

That is helpful to know, and certainly hope to not encounter the situation. Thank you for taking the time to provide the information.

Tell your leadership this story and that you want to stay, but it just doesn’t make sense for you. You should ask pwc to match the acn comp and make you an MD immediately. Make sure you are going to be put up for partner in the next cycle. Have your partner sponsor share all of the process documents with you and begin to spend time with you, talk about how you will fill them out. I believe you need “soundings” make sure you start to line those up. Get a level of comfort that you actually will make partner in the next cycle. I’m sorry, but if all of this doesn’t happen, then it’s time to move on. Relationships and loyalty are great, but at this point in your career you have to make moves. Obviously leave in a classy way, you can always come back. If you move to acn. And I think you should. Make sure you have everything in place to be successful. Understand your targets, understand the team, talk to your peers, talk with the senior leaders there. Understand their md levels, maybe push to come in at a better level than they are offering. Also you didn’t mention the signing bonus. Make sure you pull a big number there as well.

For starters first year MD at Accenture consulting makes around $300-$350K and first year Partner at PwC makes $620-650K

likehelpfulfunny

Thanks all. Helpful thread. Is the $300-$350K number salary or total comp including the RSUs?

One is a public company. Other is private

Comp at Acn is more merit based. Pwc is more tenure based. Pension and perks are much better at pwc. But if you are a young high performer, acn is the place to be

funny

bearable comparison would be between MD in Accn and a MD in PwC. When you compare against a Partner the comp structure will be diff. Mind you the partners have their own investments to take care of in any Big 4.

I know we all love the work from home (or do we?) but does anyone actually miss traveling for their consulting engagements and all the fun that goes along with it? The late nights at the office then the bar and random hookups and excitement and all that? Sure it’s a grind but I think I actually miss it too. Maybe I just miss seeing people at work or seeing people at all. I wonder if we’ll ever get back to that.

Can’t decide between Cornell’s Metro vs. Americas EMBA program. They both seem to be great and offer an Cornell MBA upon graduation. Americas costs about 155k while the Metro NY costs 205k. Both programs are 60 credits in different formats. I can’t seem to understand the difference in price. I like the Americas program because of its flexibility (can attend from selected cities across the US so I would not be stuck in NY). I like the Metro NY for the in-person classroom environment.
