A strong union makes a world of difference. I’ve seen otherwise and the results are tragic.
The attitude, more and more, seems to be , things are difficult right now, this is different right now, it would be nice to walk the extra mile right now.
Remember this, your setting a past practice. What you do now, you’ll do forever.
That’s a great point!!
I have a education degree not a therapist license. I don’t know how to deal with the mental health issues we are seeing in the classroom.
Agreed!! I feel like we are being expected to be medical workers. I don’t either AES2
It has been out turn to “push back”! We put up with way too much. Not to mention teachers are now dealing with their own stress & mental health issues.

I agree! I’m appalled that our teachers are now expected to deal with their students social/emotional issues.
I sincerely wish it were different for you. Administration knows that this is an issue, how can they not? I know 10000% that my districts higher ups are aware of the toll on teachers (in this area too), yet they do nothing substantial to alleviate the problem . I’m going to the union about this and I’m not even a teacher. If I were a teacher, I’d be calling the union as well!

Very rough!

That is a great question! ON our contracts the duties are very vague past teaching the content according to state guidelines, then there is the "any other duties that are inline, to be determined by the administration, with said duties." or something like that. lol!
Just do as I tell you! It’s anything they want you to do!
I’m getting a degree in psychology now. Seriously.

Thank you for being this issue up into the open!
Your duties are defined by the district, not the state. This, I might add, is an ever evolving document, depending very much on how much responsibility you choose to take on in the name of doing good.
Teachers are "in loco parentis" for their students during the time they are in our classes. Since I don't know how all of my students' parents parent, I do whatever I can to make sure students are able to learn whatever concept I'm teaching. Sometimes, I have to be a nurse, therapist, consoling voice, nutrition provider, equalizer, etc. Any time I'm not comfortable in the role I'm needed to play, I refer the student elsewhere.
I would love to have fulltime counsellors in our building. But we have half time at most with over 400 students. The times those counsellors are here are heavily booked, and you have go through many hoops to get a child in to see them.
Correct! Our school is now asking us to dump our trash due to a lack of custodians…pathetic!
Our district is also short custodians, but think of it this way....we want our teachers help to get the point across to the district that we need custodian positions cut by a previous superintendent to be re-filled. On top of that, our high school expanded the building footprint with the addition of an auxiliary gym a few years ago, adding to their already heavy load. The ones we have now bust their tails to get the schools cleaned, even being short staffed. The only way they will get these cut positions back is if the teachers constantly send emails to the principals that their rooms aren't getting cleaned like they should. This sets a paper trail the principals can put in front of the super and school board. Our teachers aren't doing this though, because they don't want to get the custodians in trouble, but if the complaints never get documented, the super and school board tell our bargaining unit that "you don't need more people, cause it looks like what you have are getting the work done." The have to see a documented problem history or it will never get resolved. You can also get your parents involved when they see overflowing trash cans. If they say something or you see them take notice, just mention that the custodial staff is short-staffed and has been asking for help, and they are doing the best they can, but if you'd like, you can send your complaints to our principal....in writing.
Should we do “call outs” forcing district level admin to sub in classrooms since there is a shortage of subs?
That will sure solve the problem. Great idea!!! Let’s just pay them at least a thousand dollars a day.

bringing. my joints are angry with me lol
I would imagine your state has a published set of guidelines defining the job well. Mine does.

I’m still not clear on the “new tasks”?

Stern? I don’t think a teacher needs to be stern. I stopped reading after that.

Honestly it’s my trick. I talk really quietly so they have to listen to hear me. They will shush each other to hear me. And of course I have a teacher voice. But it’s not stern. It’s veeeeeery quiet and calm. It freaks them out 😂
Teacher= Babysitter. At least that is how it is feeling anymore
Usually I have the bandwidth to have all of the talks, conversations, and heart to hearts but I can't this year. I'm absolutely exhausted and I felt like this by week 3. Then throw in Covid. This is my own kids first full year in a big kid school and we have other stuff going on. I can't this year. We have check ins and we chat about non school topics but that's about it.
I can't get all deep this year.... it's not in me and I'm not going to wear my self out trying to.
I am bumfuzzeled at how to work with all the emotional issues! I have a student who has so much anger he gets physical with me, my partner and my other students. Since he is a K student there is no specialized school for him to go to. He is about 85 lbs and one of his targets is a PK student who is maybe 35 lbs. 😭
Same here and I’m in pre-k. I come home covered in bruises and it scares my family. Luckily, I’m in a large urban district that has classrooms he can go to once we have the IEP meeting at the end of next month. Just need to get through until then.
It takes a village, and I am a member of that village. I wear many different hats because doing so is impactful for the students.
