What is the likelihood of Pharma Equity Research exiting to Pharma/ Biotech? At what positions? Can anyone who made the transition from consulting to ER share your experience? PhD no business background here. Would really appreciate your input.

If you're a Ph.D. and at LEK, I assume you're an LSS. I know a few people that did LSS for a couple of years and right when they made Consultant, they left for ER. It sounds like a massive jump, but a couple of years at LEK will set you up well. (I'm former LEK).

Thank you P1. I’m in the final phase of an ER opportunity and also got the offer from another consulting role. I want to be prepared if I need to move fast making a decision. I feel the two options would set me up onto very different paths and it is less clear to me where ER will take me. Do you have insights on whether people in ER can transition to Biotech / Pharma down the road? The impression I got during interview is that they expect people to keep doing ER for decades… Sorry for the long post. Thanks for responding!

If you want to be in biopharma after ER, why not just leave consulting and go right to biopharma and skip ER? I don't know that a few years in ER will get you farther/higher up than just doing a little more time in consulting and then going to biopharma. That said, I have seen ER people go to biopharma that have advanced degrees. If you are an LSS, then 2 years at C, then do 1 year as EM after and you can be a director at a biopharma.

Getting several more years in consulting then moving into Pharma definitely makes more sense. I was applying for ER roles on the side because I have the analytical skills. Never thought I’ll get that close to actually securing an offer. I’m always intrigued by things I never tried! Thanks for entertaining that thought with me. Really appreciate your time 😊 I’ll have to say I probably would enjoy doing consulting more

I’d skip the ER step if looking to exit to industry ultimately - rather different skill sets

I was an MBA intern and FT hire at Deloitte. Been here 3 years, been at M for the last year. I have seen others leave at this point in their careers and go direct to SM/director roles in industry, but as I start applying for jobs and have convos with recruiters, I have had more than one say that I’m light on YOE and that for that reason alone I am either not considered for a SM role or unlikely to have my salary expectations met. How can I combat/preempt this? Others clearly have.
