Depends on type of trip. Do you need to bring a lot of stuff with you or are you just packing a bag? Would you stop at places along the way or a one shot drive? I found for me, anything over 6 hours (if not camping) is a flight.

like

One reason is we’re taking our bikes which would be an added cost if we fly (rent/buy bike bags and baggage fee). It would be a one shot drive. Part of me actually doesn’t mind driving - I usually just get in the flow and listen to a bunch of podcasts but see the appeal of getting to your destination with more time to actually enjoy your vacation

like

It’s not safe. Certainly not if you do it alone.

funny

Yeah, I only pointed out the woman thing because more often than not, women are more hesitant to travel anywhere alone, whether it is a road trip or not. I have done it and do it and am not dead yet so that’s something. 😀 I just really really dislike fearmongering.

I think it depends on length of stay rather than length of trip. For example, I used to drive from Miami to NYC every year to see family but only because I'd be there a little over a month and wanted access to a car while I was there.

like

I used to do 9-12 frequently and towards the last few rides I always swore I’d never put myself through it again. If you’re the type who can do it nonchalantly and relax take breaks along the way then great. I’m the type of person that needs to get from A to B as fast as I can which makes it even less enjoyable. Over the years I won’t do more than 5.

like

I max out at 12 hours personally. But I wouldn’t do that for anything less than 7 days at my destination.

like

Same. I’ve done 12 hours a few times and find that it’s a good limit to not exceed

like

Family used to do 13 hour drives from Illinois to NY. A lot of people I knew back in Illinois would do long drives. My max now is like 6-7 hours probably.

helpful

I can do 13 hours (not including stops) by myself and have done this quite a few times during the pandemic. Personally I love driving and have no problem with it, don’t think I agree McKinsey1’s statement that it’s not safe, I don’t think there is a general rule on that.

like

As with most trips, and generally things in life, it depends .... I have personally done a few 500+ miles in one day, driving close to 12 hours. My max have been 700 miles in 12 hours (1 pm to 1 am) with about 4 stops. Will I do it every week? Absolutely not. Every month? No, thanks. A couple of times a year? Sure. If this is a one off thing, which it seems, or you'll have time to unwind on either side of the drives, I see why not. Be prepared. Music, podcast, audiobook. A variety of easily eaten snacks. Phone charger. Caffeine, if you're so inclined.

I did 14 hours (800 miles plus stops) in one day twice last month, with a 1 year old in the car. NPS 0/10

funny

Tried that driving from NY-CA in 3 days. Would not recommend.

funny

I do 600 miles a day a few times a year. I stop every 2 hours for 10 minutes. It's not that hard. In winter pack a couple blankets and snacks and drinks. Philly to U of South Carolina and Notre Dame. But I like driving and have a car I enjoy driving. If you don't drive distances very often I'd stick to 8 hours of driving spread over 9 hours including breaks. I know many people like audio books, but I find they distract me. I like music that has some punch. Free Jazz, Buckethead, classic rock, that type of thing.

like

I do 10 max but prefer 5-8. I don’t think it’s being a cheapskate if you would have to rent a car when you get there and prefer to just have your own car. If it’s only 9 hour drive you may also decide that time spent in security at the airport etc makes the drive more worth it.

We did 17 hours as a family of 4 and it was probably too much. We now look at it as time blocks, with safety in mind first. For us that means maximizing daytime driving 3A - 5A departure and we drive until sunset

Depends on the traffic situation. If my trip involves cruise control for hundreds of miles and no selfish pricks in the left lane blocking traffic, I can go on forever without getting tired. I think 900 miles in 15 hours was the longest I ever did. But if I am constantly dealing with speeding up and slowing down as hoards of cars line up in the left lane because one a—hole won’t move over, it can get pretty tiring after even 4 hours.

12 hours solo. It is rough. Have people available to call through the day, and especially hours 8-11. Snacks and drinks to keep you alert. Plan stops ahead of time with interesting things or places where you could take a quick walk. Choose stops with food you look forward to (or pack food that you like). I like Gatorade/Powerade over water for added hydration with same volume. Best of luck :)

Me (mom) and my 14yr old son. 20 hrs at the beginning of the Pandemic. Took a 3hr nap at a truck stop and got back on the remainder 9 hrs. I would NEVER EVER do that again. I am from DC and we were stuck in Colorado. I wanted to get home and was afraid to stop and be around ppl. We are sandwiches, drank little water and left early in the AM Now, we are back to flying everywhere

Advice needed! I am currently in a toxic work environment making $60k (commission structure is okay, no 401k match, in office 4 days/week and 10 days PTO), I am in the final rounds for a role at an awesome company with great culture and upward mobility, but the pay is $55k (equity, uncapped commission, remote, and unlimited PTO). I think I would love the role, and I’m sure the total comp with equity and commission would be very similar to my current role, but I am still hung up the lower salary

I'm amazed at how many people walk through the door with no idea how to behave in an interview. Look, I get it. This is for a warehouse job and we're hiring like crazy in anticipation for the holiday season, so my expectations aren't mega-high. But... holy shit. Here's a short list of what I've seen in my three days: 1) I've interviewed maybe twenty people, and our unit all together has had maybe 150 since I've arrived. Of those, THREE people showed up in appropriate interview attire. A lady came in wearing a juicy couture tracksuit today. A maroon one. 2) One guy tried to sell me weed. During his interview. 3) One guy commented that I was "nice for a white person". Then he tried to hit on me. During the interview.

Is it realistic in big law to take 20 days of mostly uninterrupted vacation time a year? My firm has unlimited and my group doesn’t take more than a couple days off a year. I like the work and people but there’s no way I can or will stay long term without being able to take 20 days of real vacation a year for my health and to live my life. Firm policy says while vacation is unlimited they encourage 20 days. What’s the temperature in the room on this ?
