What is the main reason for seniors (like senior associate with 8-10 yoe) to quit BL?

Having a bit of an existential crisis - but fishbowl hasn’t steered me wrong so far.

I’ve got an offer to study a masters in international affairs (focus in economics) at Columbia SIPA (no financial aid package) or I could stay in management consulting (5-6 ywe) at Oliver Wyman.

I enjoy consulting but it wasn’t what I see myself doing long term. Longer term I saw myself either being an economist or working in the world bank.

Is it common for attorneys to go from big law to the EEOC, state departments (like CA DFEH), or DOJ Civil division (employment)? Or is there usually a step in between (e.g. clerkship, plaintiff’s side work, etc.)? Thank you!

Anyone feel like they regret being in consulting? I’m a serious introvert who wishes instead of going to school for business, I did something more technical and ended up as a developer. It could be isolation making things worse, but I’ve come to realize I really hate talking/facilitating due to social anxiety lol. But I feel it’s too late to do anything about it (I’m 27).

While I am in the office, I don’t always get the billable amount since I don’t have enough work. Record billables over the year and a half have shown that associates are indefinitely more efficient working at home. If you want me to come to the office, lower your billable expectation or pay me more. Simple economics. We have leverage, let’s exert it here.

People who live on one coast but have most of your friends and family on the other coast: how do you deal with traveling for weekend events? Is it just redeye city or do you find that people understand if you need to fly during work hours?

Partners: what would you think if a first year associate tells you she is pregnant? And what advise would you give about telling my partners? It was totally unplanned so now I am scared that this may hurt my career and I would be seen as not being committed to the job. This will be my second kid but we had our first while I was in law school. Most of the partners I am working with have at least two kids but also they are men. No female associates with kids in my office.
