I tend to think people give too much weight to the “pushed out” narrative. I’m a senior who will be getting out soon. There is not even the slightest indication I’m not performing as expected (in fact, signals point in the opposite direction). The reality is that I’m leaving because (i) I don’t want to do it anymore and (ii) my financial circumstances don’t tether me to the job.

I don’t really see this actually happening around me. Most people don’t want partnership, and the firms will let people take Counsel positions or stay associates for seemingly forever.

Up or out firm policy (usually unofficial). Firms make a lot more money off junior/mid-level associates. If they have too many seniors, it’s not good for the bottom line l, so they gradually get pushed out.

Retire before partner LFG!
Learning what the salary difference is yo partner and/or the extra non billables that come with the consistent expectations for billables that dont really decrease… and the finding some things might be different at some firms but not materially so.
C3 - Yep. I had a family member that retired as “big time” partner at “big time” firm (like everyone in city knows his name) basically “counsel” me to think long and hard if being partner was worth it. Used to be in some firms they didnt give them option for counsel or staff attorney or of counsel - it was up or out.
