What is the value prop of an MBA? I want one mainly for the school’s branding, but it’s hard to justify that at a ~500k opportunity cost.

The value prop of an MBA completely depends on the individual. Usually it takes the form of different opportunities (network, access to capital and mentorship for starting a venture, immediate financial gain, career switching, finding love 💕, etc.) that the individual may not have access to currently. Some just want a two year break without it looking terrible on their resume. Coming from consulting, you may have access to a lot of the same network, financial and career opportunities one may want coming out of an MBA so it may not make sense. Or maybe you don’t - only you can say.

Following! Also mainly looking for the branding as I attended a state school for undergrad... but the cost is intimidating

That opp cost is pretty insane. For most people, it’s less than half of what you just stated. Also, most people(not on fishbowl) have a pretty mediocre/unfulfilling job and are trying to break into a higher paying job like yours, OP. So I guess people like you are in the minority, and to answer your question, I don’t really see a reason to get one unless you want to switch careers or you just want that experience.

Maybe a PT MBA might be better for you? More flexibility/same degree minus the same level of networking/internship opps

Also way cheaper

I thought McKinsey sponsored their people? If you could do that, and you currently enjoy your Consulting gig there, then I would definitely go for the MBA.

Honestly the only reason I see someone from MBB to get an mba is to attempt to do Pe/VC or switch to IB. You can get into tech from MBB without an mba, and don’t need grad school to start a company.

Hey fam. Appreciate your inputs on this: I used to be a software developer and currently work as a tech risk consultant (CISA, CRISC certified). Have completed a couple of cyber courses but do not have prior cyber experience. Most cyber sec job postings require prior experience in cloud, aws, devops etc. Applied to a couple of roles but no avail. A) Can I start a career in cyber security without prior experience? B) Will CISSP or relevant cyber certifications help?

My firm is paying for my MBA and if I leave now I’ll have to pay anything they’ve paid all back. Assuming I leave now, would it be possible for me to get a student loan to pay the firm back or would it have to be a personal loan since it’s not going directly to school to but rather paying the firm for school? What are my options? Has anyone gone through this before? Thanks!!
