What is the way to calculate annual or YTD return of my investment portfolio? I have TD Ameritrade and Fidelity, and none of them show me what my rate of return has been for the last year. They give me monthly statements with one month’s performance, but I want to compare my returns to the benchmark. I can only see cumulative return numbers, but not annual return, and with the inflows of new capital, purchases, dividend payments and reinvestment, it is hard to hand calculate this. Contd.

Performance of your portfolio is literally right there on Fidelity.

At least yours is positive 😰 I think I’m not cut out for the stock market

I use personal capital. I’ve been using them for the past 3 years and I prefer them over mint. I prefer person capital Over mint because
- personal capital provides a more granular view of my Investments (and also allows me to see what fees I’m getting charged)
- It calculated my returns over any timeframe
- it helps me calculate how much I need to retire early.
- I don’t need mint as all my bills are on autopay and I always pay them one or two months in advance.

Vanguard also puts it right up top front and center. Are you sure you’re not just missing it somewhere on TD Ameritrade?

I feel this number is very important to get comfortable with FIRE, as it will show what the annual rate of returns have been for the past couple of years.

Ameritrade does not have it which has most of my non retirement investments. I know I also mentioned but Fidelity — thanks D1, looks like they make it easier. Will need to change brokers.

Contd. What do you guys use? Is there a website/ tool that will suck in my investment transaction history and spit out the return numbers Accounting for shares splits, dividend payments etc.? Mint is garbage for this, their investment analysis page shows me centi million gain :-)

Do people tend to age out of wanting to FIRE?

In your 20s-30s, you don’t know much, you’re told what to do, you have few financial resources so you are tied to your job. Under these circumstances it makes perfect sense why you would want to FIRE asap.

But eventually you advance up the ladder, you are now the boss and your people do all the grunt work. You also have built up expertise which makes the job easier. And you are making the best money of your life. FIRE is no longer so pressing.

Serious question - is there a reverse FIRE strategy? I like the idea of saving and retiring early, but the one hiccup I see (and sorry if this is grim) is if you die earlier than expected. I’d be worried that I would minimize lifestyle and fun for retirement at 50 but I’d die at 49. How about a way to work 9 months out of the year and retire/travel/relax for 3 months? This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled

Any other tips and tricks that work for you?
