What is the weirdest interview question you’ve been asked while interviewing? Mine is a tie: 1) what is your favorite excel formula? And 2) what are the intricacies between 2 sql commands. These were for non technical positions!

Excel isn't technical :p. #2 is odd to ask though in a functional interview.

I think mine was PMP related questions for a pure dev/ops role.

likefunny

Favorite excel formula is an odd question though. Tells more about limited view of the interviewer than anything.

Recently was asked why my college major didn’t appear on the college’s website (in such a tone that implied I had lied on my resume). I graduated over a decade ago from a small school that has since reinvented itself. Very hostile question to ask right off the bat. Needless to say, the team wasn’t the right fit for me.

like

Not unique at all! I have a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and listed it as such; I hadn’t been on the college website in over 10 years (until after this interview), and it looks like the school scaled back their offerings to a few select programs. Interviewer literally said—in the first 2 minutes of the interview— “something just doesn’t up add, can you explain why your degree program isn’t on the website.” Just thought it was a wild way to start the conversation...

Are you single? Was mine

funny

“What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?”

Definitely took some serious effort to filter out college stories

like

“I see your interests are XYZ...what do you learn from these interests and how do you apply it to your job?”

How would you collect the menus of every restaurant in the world?

funny

Do you have a family? Uh, yes. I am not an orphan alone in the world.

I think it was teetering on an illegal question regarding do you have kids/a spouse with the bias (conscious or unconscious) that you may not be able to work as hard because you may have other obligations... And if you're female may as teeter onto projecting that starting a family may hinder your work as well.

like

Mine was also the Excel question! Then he wanted to know why and let me elaborate on that about 10 minutes... which left us with almost no time for the case 🤷🏽‍♂️

D, it CAN BE the correct answer for the purpose you want to achieve. But here in this case, the interviewer is testing your knowledge. I do the same when interviewing interns and they state they’re proficient or an expert in Excel.

Excel and SQL are not technical

Thinking back I may have asked an awkward question. At the time I was trying to get a company basketball team together and asking all my colleagues if they wanted to join and play.

We were interviewing for another person to join our team. 3 of 4 people already on the team were avid basketball players and we play together a lot.

I was trying to show the candidate that we have fun together after work and company culture is pretty social (drinks, sports, etc). Because the interview is a 2 way street.

I asked the candidate do you play any sports? How about basketball? We're starting a basketball team.

Thinking back at it, it could come off as unofficial part of the interview - that if he wasn't social and fun with us we wouldn't hire him... But also he was a taller black male so that may come off as a stereotype. (queue Michael Scott and basketball episode).

He ended up joining the company and was great employee, but we actually never got a chance to play basketball because he was assigned to a different location.

“What makes you tick?”. Asked by a very intense man who conducted an interrogation like interview. I am naturally a super calm person and worked in call centers in college so have seen the worst of human behavior; I still have no idea what he was looking to get out of that question.

I always wonder how those type of folks will react id I just say a paycheck instead of a canned response that you say to get hired.

"What makes you excited to take on this job?" As a Proj Mgr/ solution arch consultant put forward for a test analyst role with no other firm teammates on the project. Yeah nothing excited me for the role since i ascertained during the interview the project was poorly run.

OMG! Why do recruiters go dark on you!? I had a great conversation with a hiring manager who said things like I can’t believe she (recruiter) found you, you are so polished, I want you to meet with the girl on my team -like I had it in the bag. The conversation with the girl on the team went well and told me how excited the hiring manager is and called her right away…. I email the recruiter to ask about next steps and nothing……

I have been selected for technical round of Amazon sde-1. Any suggestions would help me in preparing for it.

Hello fellow HR pros! I really need your opinions on HR certifications. I am deciding between PHR and SHRM-cp. I have read just about all there is online comparing the two and can not decide. My heart is telling me PHR, my mother in law (an HRBP) is telling me to go with SHRM, as it’s more widely recognized, more established and a larger network in general. I work for a 350~ company who is growing rapidly through M&A. Passions/interests are compliance, strategic vision, M&A, branding and culture
