People are excited to have actually gotten a great job after school. And most of the posts I see are people from disadvantaged backgrounds who beat the odds, so they're particularly excited. Sure it's a little annoying but might as well let them be happy. Better than most of the other bragging or annoying posts I see on social media. Plus I like seeing where people end up.
Not sure about your point on participate trophies though. That's not really a thing any one cares about, particularly young people, so it makes you come across a little bit like "old man yells at cloud."
How exactly are you identifying people with disadvantaged backgrounds on LinkedIn?
Getting a job is a huge accomplishment that one should be proud of. Getting the right grades, doing extracurriculars, enduring the recruiting process, etc. School can be incredibly stressful if you aren’t graduating with a job and is the ultimate goal of many students. Whenever I see my friends getting jobs I remember what it felt like when I got my first jo and I’m just overjoyed for them, especially when it’s a great company.
Don’t be such a grumpy goose and share in other peoples joy. A job is a blessing, one that opens up so many opportunities in life.
Yes, by all means let's complain about participation trophies for people who...*checks notes*...worked hard and got a job.
And announced it on the social media platform designed specifically for...announcing jobs.
What I don’t understand is how these interns have 200k likes for a post about joining Google for the summer
I have a few humble rags I keep around to remind me where I came from
What exactly do you want people to post on linked in? They should be excited for a job. Being pumped for new jobs is kind of LinkedIn's whole bit.
I'm so tired of millennial bashing. If people are excited, it's a call for attention. If they're not excited, they're entitled.
Completely agree. Though interns are now Gen Z. I guess some people are just going to hate anything anyone younger than them does or doesn’t do. Seems like an unpleasant way to live
Who hurt you OP? These kids are excited; your job is not to kill their joy.
1. They should be excited. Your first job out of college is a really big transition point in your life
2. Similar to the person above, many of the one I’ve seen have been from people who really had to beat the odds.
2b. They are doubly deserving of excitement
2c. They serve as motivation and inspiration for others in similar positions
3. LinkedIn is meant for making connections and keeping people appraised of your current professional situation. Hard to blame someone for doing just that.
Because it IS a big deal. I remember when i got my first consulting job out of college. I knew I wouldn't know anything on day 1, or even day 100 for that matter, but I did know that my life trajectory had just changed forever in a very good way, all because some senior manager (like you OP) took a chance on me.
I applied to over 500 positions before getting a call for interview. It’s tough getting picked for an interview which you then have to nail to get a good job. So yes, I will show my excitement by putting a little post on LinkedIn.
Don’t be such a grump OP
On par with bragging about your ACT score
Actually it isn’t at all, citing an ACT score sure does give away your maturity though.
Of the millennial things to complain about, this does seem particularly petty.
How bout that avocado toast tho, huh?!
Meh, I’m a generation older and it always comes off as immature and a perceived humble brag. I don’t need to announce to 500 strangers when I get a new job, I’m not that important.
Not far below it, however, are the recruiters who love to share their wise, sage advice on navigating the job market or how to stay positive. I don’t know when working in HR = doctorate in philosophy but it’s rampant these days.
I agree with everyone about this response, D5
They think they’re college football recruits.
I know someone that did a ‘Company Reveal Party’ for the job she accepted
You need better network of friends.
I think more people have LinkedIn out of college. I remember when I started 6 years ago none of my friends were on LinkedIn until they got far into their job search. I think younger people throw out likes more easily as well.
I was in a business fraternity and most were on it. It was also when social media was just starting so we were overly excited?
A job is not a participation trophy, you don’t just show up to college and magically get one (or even a degree for that matter). Let them be excited!
Someone talking about having a job on a professional networking website? The audacity
If you’re not building a brand on LinkedIn you’re doing not wrong
This post is why there’s a gap in understanding how technology has changed the workforce. Building your own personal brand is incredible important — welcome to the digital age. We’ve been waiting for you.
You can tell who in this thread felt the need to post a self-congratulatory pat on the back on social media haha. Im 24 but I guess Im “out of touch” cause I dont stroke myself off online ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What’s the problem here? Are we complaining about people being happy about finding a good job?
I feel like people like you lose perspective in your all out war against youth.
