The partners turn down work to help manage work life balance - so definitely not empty promises. Turnover is very low (less than 5%) while at crazy high levels at Big 4. Partners are much more empowered here.

like

At the same time, the value of a low staff turnover is difficult to argue with. It’s not as expressive to keep staff as it is to replace them, etc.

At any firm, it mostly just comes down to luck of the draw given the nature of the work - whether that’s with who you’re working under, what client you’re working for, and the deal itself. I’ve had extremely chill days/weeks at both A&M and Big 4, and sometimes busier periods at both as well.

With that said, my personal experience at A&M is I’ve had more control over my work-life balance given that our compensation is tied to how much we work. Partners and senior managers here generally seem more cognizant of respecting people’s time and making sure we don’t work too late (even telling me to log off or something can be done the next day), whereas at Big 4 I felt more pressure to work late just because the Partner/senior manager would be online and expect us to be as well.

like

Gotcha. These metrics are reported to us so we can see the firm’s collection rate. My specific group typically collects close to 100%, so fortunately hasn’t been an issue for me. Another difference is our clients are almost entirely PE firms, whereas back in Big 4 I had more public corporation clients where their AP department wasn’t as on top of paying our invoices.

I assume they handle it like the Big4 - make some empty pronouncements about how much they are focused on improving it while doing nothing to actually improve it

like

@PwC1 - definitely not from FDD.

Work life balance is definitely something the group is very focused on given the high level of deal flow. They do a great job trying to help manage it as best as possible, much of it is just the nature of the work. It’s better than Big 4 and definitely get paid more for the work anyway.

Agree with PwC 2. One thing though the India function at PwC is actually really good. I hardly ever build models/mess with tbs/ do formatting. I am a manager though so I would assume at A&M I'd just give this stuff to an associate

I'm scheduled to have my first interview with Stripe this week with an Exec Recruiter for a non-tech leadership position. I have a few friends of friends there, also in leadership positions, and I'm wondering when the smartest time to ask them to advocate for me might be? Now? Wait til I advance further? Coming from a world where hiring processes are informal and the single most-important thing is who you know at a company, I'm a little unfamiliar w/ the tech world interview process.

I am an entry level nuclear engineer at an established nucl co. (been w them for 1.5y) and feel like I’m being underpaid for my role (73k/y). I was just contacted about interviewing for an entry level technician role at a different co., which compared to an engineer would be a step down imo. However, this role pays over 5k what I’m currently making (~79k/y). Do I ask for a raise to match this or consider the other role? Or Is there a different solution here?
