What is your approach to working with high risk clients who tend to be combative and resistant in your sessions?

I try to read their body language. If I find them having little to no interest in sharing I try to build a rapport. But the best approach is to respect the clients decision. If they are not ready to answer questions or whatnot, respect them and hope that next time will be better.

Yes, I don’t push, prod, or force! Establishing a sense of comfort is very important.

Hmm...I think it's a slow climb for sure, so it takes a lot of patience. What exactly do they push back on? what kind of approach are you taking at the moment?

One person I’m working with has been kind of disengaged from the start. I work with children and adolescents and the kiddo (13y/o) had a “I don’t want to be here” mindset from jump. They mentioned they haven’t had the best experience with previous counselors, so I keep that in mind. Yet, it’s been months now and mom just convinced them to try to at least stay for 40 minutes of our session. They barely want to talk, play games, and will only meet with me if their parent is in the session. We’ve had a handful of sessions where they’ll engage by speaking their mind a lil, but they’ll shut down once we really start to get into the discussion. I take in what I can, yet still try to make things productive.

Have you ever dealt with a colleague that believes in extremely (in my opinion) outdated or even just false claims and treats them as scientific facts? I work with several older men but one of them practices "provocative therapy" as in you just play the devil's advocate with your patient and side with the negative half of their thinking. In theory I could see this working situationally, but as a whole philosophy regardless of the patient's issue I think it's ridiculous.

I wish people would think clearly and hard about having children beforehand. Working as a school counselor and a youth therapist, so much trauma starts early simply because parents don't know any better or do what they were taught. It's tough when it isn't abuse or neglect, but it's still having a negative impact on the child's life. Should I recommend family therapy? Is it overstepping to recommend the parent go to private therapy as well?
