We can use 6 weeks of sick days and get paid while on maternity, with an option of taking an additional 6 weeks of unpaid leave. And these 12 weeks can be intermittent, meaning, we can use them in any way we want within 1 year of the child being born. So we can use 8 weeks when the child is born, then use 4 another time during that year if we choose. School breaks and summer do NOT factor into those leave times either.
When I need to do that, the option I choose in Aesop is medical appointment-family, or sick leave - family. Something like that. A lot of us have small kids, or likewise aging parents, so it’s never questioned.

Illinois Stare Code allows both parents to use up to 30 paid sick days for child birth, FMLA can give you up to 12 weeks leave but does not guarantee pay
