What is your company’s paternity leave policy (paid/unpaid, number of weeks)? For those who took it, how was the experience (at home and at work)?

16 weeks paid. It was a very special time.

16 weeks paid. Totally worth it. Took it all at once which is what I would suggest so that you can truly disconnect from work and spend it with your family. I took it after wife took maternity leave, so it was even better because the baby and I could really connect.

If you can spread out the time that’s a more optimal use of your 16 weeks - kids have zero memories before about age 2 - but initially it’s nice to support the new Mom. If you can take it later, it would mean more to your baby, if you can’t, take it all at once. Congrats - being a parent is the best.

Wow we only got 8 for paternity

Who is "we"?

Who cares, water broken only needs a week or two. Kids shouldn't be the company's problem. I'vr been turned down promo and raise not because of performance but because I don't need it since I don't have kids. Sympathy is non-existent for me.

In what world does "water broken only needs a week or two?" I wish you could experience childbirth so you can see what it's like to only have a week or two to recover. Your attitude and lack of sympathy, and empathy, comes off as overwhelmingly hostile, detrimental to the discussions being had, and honestly, not a good look. Check yourself and reflect on why you don't get promotions, other than the fact that you don't have kids (plenty of people who don't have kids still get promotions), and thus, "don't need promotions." Promotions should be earned, not handed out to those who "need" them.

Zero in the first year. I also work for the biggest healthcare company in the US. Had a baby last July and got negative feedback about not ensuring coverage during that time. I took four days PTO.

That's just terrible.

How do you all deal with family members who ask you for legal advice? Specifics: My father in law is trying to negotiate a buyout of his interest in a company in California he owns 1/3 of and he keeps asking my husband (a patent attorney in IL) and me (a divorce attorney in IL) to help them draft or negotiate contracts. They don’t want to talk to another lawyer. We have told them ad nauseam we aren’t qualified. They keep hounding us for “advice” we don’t have. The company hired a lawyer today.

Has the blush come off the rose for this shining city on a hill? Have any other foreign fish in the US been asking yourself why we made the conscious decision to seek out a life in this country? The racial tensions and frequent shootings (including a much covered grocery store that I used to frequent) are outweighing the benefits of staying here. Never have I had to worry this much about going to the grocery store. The reaction of society here towards these issues is also dismal. Is it worth it?
